Someone Banish Grandma - An East Texas University One-Shot

Our First Guest Writer

Before you start reading, I'd like to give a very appreciative thank you to Living 4 Crits' first guest writer. The adventure summary that you are about to read (in just a few paragraphs) is by one of my players, my friend +Andrew Cady. We had a great game Thursday night, and Andrew's character (Heather the Journalism student) played a very important role. Besides, its only fitting to have a journalism major tell you what happened.

Back in Session

In two weeks my regular, in-person gaming group will begin an East Texas University campaign. I've been back and forth on just which Savage Worlds setting I would be running this fall. After much conversation within our group, as well as some very constructive feedback on the Facebook and Google+ Savage Worlds Communities (you people are awesome, by the way), we settled on ETU.

Go Ravens!

I soon found myself facing a new dilemma. I was so excited about running ETU that I didn't want to wait two whole weeks before exploring Pinebox, Texas. Hoping to polish my horror skills, and give some of the new ETU game mechanics a try, I put out a call for players on Google+. A Savage Worlds One-Shot was in order.

The best thing about being a gamer in 2015 is that it is so easy to throw together a game on the fly and grab some players for a pick-up session. Adam, Alex, and Andrew were all on board for an evening of campy collegiate horror. Coming up with characters was simple, as the folks over at Pinnacle Entertainment Group offer pre-gen college students that you can find on their website or at DriveThruRPG. I just gave the players a list of the possible student archetypes, and they made their selections.

Adam chose the Fraternity Brother (Brody), Alex called the Activist (Chad Jennings), and after some back and forth on the event page, Andrew went with the Journalist (Heather).

The Challenge

Before I hand this blog post over to Andrew, I have to share the adventure writing methodology that I used for this adventure. When I first purchased East Texas University back in June of this year, I devoured the book in one evening. I found the setting charming, the tone moody yet playful, and the new game mechanics well crafted and finely tuned. ETU as a campaign setting perfectly matches the Savage Worlds mantra of "Fast, Furious, Fun."

But what impresses me most about East Texas University is the meticulously crafted Adventure Generator in the back of the setting book. Taking up thirteen of the book's ninety-six total pages, the Adventure Generator isn't just page filler. This is a tool. A powerful tool that give the game master (or "Dean" as they are called in ETU) the ability to throw together an adventure with little or no effort.

Using the Adventure Generator is a breeze. The Dean starts by drawing regular playing cards for five categories:

  • Who
  • What
  • Why
  • Where
  • Complication

Depending on the card and suit, the results are random. Drawing an "8" for "Who" means that the antagonist is a Scientist. Perhaps a crazy visiting professor of temporal dynamics is causing hell in Pinebox. Drawing an "Ace" for "Why" yields an accident. Maybe that visiting professor is actually from the future, and was sent back in time to East Texas University to change history.

You get the idea.

Some results require more cards be drawn from additional random tables. A list of possible Pinebox Environs, Supernatural Creatures, and Victims are just some of whats in store.

I mentioned a challenge, so here it is:

To play this particular one-shot, I would use the Adventure Generator and draw cards accordingly. After reviewing the results, I would time myself and allow only ten minutes to create a two hour session. So that I wouldn't cheat, I blocked off 8:20pm to 8:30pm on Thursday.

8:30pm was our start time, so I had to be on top of my game!

Before I give you all of the behind the scenes from the adventure, I'm going to hand this off to Andrew. After reading Heather the Journalist's story, I'll share a breakdown of what I drew, and how I made some of the decisions on the fly.

Heather's Story (Written by Heather… I mean +Andrew Cady)

Hello Interwebs.

I know I normally blog about the food I eat, and the latest story I am investigating for the ETU newspaper, but today I really need to tell you what happened to me last Thursday. It’s taken me a few days to gather my thoughts (that and I had two final exams on Friday) but here I go.

It all started a week ago when my (ex)friend Stacy told me of this really cute boy she knew who “would be just like totally perfect for you. You’ve, like, got to go out with him.” She said she thought the kid’s name was Brody Jennings but wasn’t quite sure. Usually I avoid blind dates, but after the Stan incident I figured what the hell. Besides there was this Italian Mom and Pop type restaurant I had heard about in Pinebox I wanted to try. I was going to blog about it here like usual. I told Stacy that I was free Thursday night, and I would gladly meet this boy at Sal’s Calabrian Summer for dinner at 6pm. She said she would make it happen.

Sal’s was a nice quant place. An old Duplex style house with one half converted into a restaurant. It sounds weird sure, but the place was decked out rather nice. Had the feel of eating in the home of an Italian family not really a restaurant. When I arrived there was two business-like gentlemen sitting at a table not eating; a thing which I thought was totally weird. (damn you Stacy your vocabulary is rubbing off into my writing) There was also a trio of Tri-Delts passing around their one brain-cell as they tried their best to study. (I swear one was holding her book upside down)

I was seated by the nice hostess and owner Sally Spanno at a nice romantic table for two, as I waited for my mystery man to arrive. That was when, an admittedly hunky, frat boy walked in wearing a HS Letterman jacket (seriously dude this is college). He was followed closely by a well-dressed guy, who was kinda cute, but had the look about him that screamed ‘overachieving pre-law student’. I immediately assumed the frat boy was my date, there was no way Stacy knew anyone in pre-law.

To my surprise they both walked over to my table and asked if I was Heather. Some very awkward moments followed. We all confirmed that Stacy did in fact set this up, and that the Frat boy’s name WAS Brody, but the Law-student’s name was Chad Jennings (yes he was Actually Pre-Law). Chad seemed particularly upset about his ruined evening, which brought the hostess Sally over to our table.

On her way over though, I noticed she was being harassed by the Businessmen. They clearly wanted something from her, I assumed initially it was the food they were waiting on. Sally brushed them off and headed our way. She noticed the awkwardness of our situation and offered us a bigger table behind the two business men. We gladly accepted and sat down and started looking at the menu.

Chad’s rather put-off mood quickly changed when he saw broccoli rabe on the Menu. It was a dish I’ve never heard of (I’ll have to try someday and tell you all about it) but Chad said it was a traditional Italian dish his mother used to make back home. When Sally returned Chad ordered that, Brody and I opted for the escarole soup.

When Sally tried to return to the kitchen with our order, the businessmen accosted her again. I couldn’t hear what they were saying, but the threat of violence was clear. I decided to make a show of getting my camera out of my messenger bag and putting it on the table. Hoping that would dissuade the men.

They saw my camera and clearly were not happy. I got Brody to pose for a picture as I took the picture of the two men seen below.

<FILE REMOVED>

Sally was returning to our table with our drinks when one of the business men grabbed her by the arm. He said something like “No more games. We will have her back now!” That is when I noticed the man had a gun. I quickly started taking more pictures. (Seen below)

<FILES REMOVED>

Sally in turned pulled out a large glass flask she had under her clothing and threatened the man with it. Saying something like “She will protect me!” It was hard to hear because wind was blowing very hard as that freak storm I am sure you all remember had just blown in. Just then lightning struck near buy and the load crash of thunder seemed to propel events. Brodiyheroically charged the man with the gun, but he was pistol-whipped aside. The man then shot Sally in the side. She fell to the ground her glass bottle shattering on the floor, spreading ash everywhere.

That is when things got even weirder. The ash swirled around into the air forming the specter like image of an old lady. She flew at the man with the gun entering him through his eyes, nose, and mouth. Soon blood started to flow from his eyes and his nose. He started coughing and he fell to his knees. A moment later he was dead on the floor.

Brody and Chad quickly subdued the other man, and I knocked him out with pepper spray. It was then that we remembered Sally, still laying on the ground in a growing pool of her own blood. I didn’t know what to do, but Chad quickly sprang into action. One would think the man was a med student not pre-law, the way he handled Sally’s gunshot wound. Using some alcohol from the bar as well as some napkins and bar implements, he was able to pry out the bullet, and stop the bleeding as well as administer some treatments for shock. It was impressive work.

Sounds of pots and pans were soon coming from the kitchen, and I grabbed my camera and Brody to investigate. There I saw a pot on the stove, stirring itself, the flame around its edges and unnatural blue. The apparition of an old lady appeared to us. She called herself Grandma, and told us our soup would be done shortly. The being said she wanted to talk to me, and me alone and told me to send Brody away. I complied with her request.

It turns out Grandma was looking for a host someone to possess so that she could live again. Luckily she did not have me in mind for this task, but instead wanted Joy, one of the sorority girls I recognized when I came in. They were still at their table mindlessly chatting and studying away, oblivious to the world around them. I of course agreed to the task, one does not argue with a ghost looking for a host less you become it. Grandma told me to come back in a few, our soup would be ready then.

I went back to Brody and Chad and told them what this ghost thing wanted. Chad was not about to sacrifice someone else so that and old lady could live again. He soon pulled up a banishment ritual on his phone, from some witchcraft website he knew about, and Brody remembered he had an old Ouija board in the back of his truck from a frat party. Chad grabbed some bar-salt and started drawing symbols on the floor. While Brody ran out to his truck the get the board game.

The weather was brutal, hail stones the size of golf balls, but this big dumb looking jock was surprisingly nimble. Using the light of the phone to guide his way he dodged hail stone after hailstone with grace and ease. His return trip was not quite as graceful, but he was trying to keep this cardboard gameboard from being destroyed by the elements.

Once he was back inside Chad had the ritual all set-up. There was just one minor snag. The ritual required the performer to have a strong connection with the being you were trying to banish. You had to imbibe something that they loved in order to draw them out. The site said drink worked best for flowing liquid had more magical energy than solid food. We however didn’t know what Grandma even liked. I was of course sent to find out.

Grandma was nice and polite and super creepy as I got her talking about her youth and her favorite drinks. I talked to her about getting Joy liquored up, to make Grandma’s dominance after the possession an easier thing. It turns out Grandma used sneak sips of the cooking wine her mother used when they cooked together in her youth. During that time she developed a taste for Chablis and drinking it always reminded her of those great times in the kitchen. That discovered, Grandma handed me a bowl of soup and insisted I taste it. I was reluctant. Taking food from the dead never seems to go well. But she was rather insistent, and getting on the bad side of an incorporeal being was not on my to-do list this evening. My fears however, were completely justified. The soup was wretched. Mostly rotten and foul. It took tremendous fortitude on my part not to wretch right there in front of the apparition.

I returned to the group grabbing a bottle of Chablis from near the bar, and telling them one of use needed to drink this. The one doing to ritual. Brodi Volunteered and chugged the cooking wine in true frat fashion. We then started the ritual. Things were going well, until Chad realized a small detail we had not yet acquired; Grandma’s real first name. Sally did not know the answer, Grandma had been dead for some time, and she always just called her Grandma. I quickly opened up my Ancestry.web account on my phone and after a few minutes search found that Grandma was actually named Lucile, or was it Lucille. There was two different spelling on immigration documents. We had to get it right on the Ouija board or we risked pulling in the wrong spirit. Brodi made a wild guess. And guessed right. The ritual complete we heard screaming from the kitchen. Then the ghostly image of Grandma, was being sucked through the room into the empty Chablis bottle.

The weather dissipated then, and before we thought to leave the cops arrived. We hadn’t discussed what to tell them. Chad, being the “Truth will set you free” kind of activist, opted to tell them the truth. They quickly took him away. Brody and I stayed quiet and let Sally spin a story.

I hear Sally has since skipped town. Pinebox Reality already has her place on the market. I hear they are bringing in a shrink from Austin to talk to Chad. Brody and I are getting together for "Study groups” now, trying to think of a way to get Chad out of lock-up. To be honest though, we actually spend most of the time making out.

What? He’s actually a really good kisser.

(Maybe I should stay friends with Stacy after all.)

Behind the Screams

I'm not going to sugar coat my initial reaction after drawing cards for the Adventure Generator. I wasn't happy with the results. I felt like one of the chefs on "Chopped" getting handed a crazy basket of mystery ingredients. Here's how the cards fell:

  • Who: Antagonists are organized crime
  • What: Accident (requires draw on the Victim table)
  • Victim: Paranormal
  • Why: Secret
  • Where: Pinebox, local business
  • Complication: Terrible storm

The clock was ticking, and I'll admit that I panicked. I could easily work with two or three of these, but all of them at once made no sense at all. Sure, I could've cheated and just drawn different cards. No one would be the wiser. But I would know, and this was supposed to be a test. I was a "Dean" dammit! I was in'dean'structable, and I needed to let go of all my dean'ial...

I closed my eyes, and thought, "what would Dean Pelton do?"

Start small, I figured. Take care of the easy results.

"Where" and "Complication" actually worked together quite well. I would set the adventure in a local restaurant and have there be a terrible storm outside. The lightning, hail, and possible twister would force the players to stay inside the restaurant and help create a sense of claustrophobia.

This was going to be a "bottle episode."

The antagonists were a part of some kind of organized criminal activity. First I wrote down "Sopranos", and had the full intention of literally throwing Tony Soprano into the adventure. I scratched out Tony's name quickly, though. Despite my affinity for fun mash-ups, I believe that I sometimes use pop culture references as a crutch in my adventures. Sure they can be fun, but over reliance on fictional characters from TV and movies is lazy. I cold do better.

So I came up with the Rogue Street Magician Mafia. I remember discussing David Blaine with a few relatives once, and someone mentioned that the only way he could do his magic was if he sold his soul to the devil. Well maybe the Rogue Street Magician Mafia (RSMM, because I love acronyms) were a collection of Las Vegas street performers who all sold their souls to demonic entities and collected weird paranormal artifacts.

But what kind of "paranormal" victim could succumb to an "accident", and how would this involve a "secret?"

Three to go.

The restaurant would be a small Italian eatery in downtown Pinebox. Initially I was going to have the owner, Sally "Sal" Spanno, be a lycanthrope as the "secret" and "victim" all at once, but that didn't make much sense. I went back to the Adventure Generator and re-read the tables. The "secret" was supposed to involve forbidden knowledge. Perhaps Sally got all of her recipes from her dead grandmother, who was a trapped spirit kept within an urn or jar. This never came out during the game, but the RSMM had the same idea, and knew of the power the "Grandma Jar" had over chefs. They wanted the jar for themselves so that they could aid a fellow RSMM member who just happened to own a restaurant in Las Vegas.

Probably over the top, but I was gonna go with it.

I was left with an accident that had to happen to the grandmother's spirit, and that part ended up being easy. At some point in the adventure I needed that jar to break, and unleash the spirit.

The players would have to deal with the gangsters, the spirit on the loose, and the storm outside.

I wasn't sure how the adventure was going to start out, but Alex figured it out for me. There was some confusion about the start time, so Alex wasn't online at 8:30pm. I was looking across the screen at Adam and Andrew, and I decided to kick things off with just two players. Since this was Andrew's first time playing the opposite gender, I thought it would be fun to have his character meeting Adam's on a blind date.

And then Alex showed up.

What the heck, what if they were all meeting on a blind date? A friend of Heather accidentally set her up with both Brody and Chad on the same night. I am so lucky to have great players! Adam, Andrew, and Alex did a tremendous job roleplaying the opening scene. They were bickering with each other, and cursing their friend (Stacy) repeatedly. Adam made sure that his character was Facebooking, Tweeting, and Instagraming the entire sequence in game.

#WorstDateEver

I loved how Alex had Chad ditch the date so quickly. Rather than talking to Heather, Chad started flirting with Sally.

The combat sequence between the characters and the goons clearly demonstrated the challenges that regular college students would face in a fight. The RSMM gangsters came to the restaurant armed with pistols and extendable clubs, while no one in the party had a Fighting die higher than a d4. Furthermore, the best weapon the party wielded was Heather's pepper spray. When the thugs threatened Sally with a gun both Brody and Chad sprung into action, but failed in their initial attempts to grapple and disarm the "Dagger Brothers".

The "accident" would take care of this. I decided to have one of the two goons shoot Sally, but this resulted in the urn breaking. Sally called upon her grandmother's scattered ashes to aid her, and granny was happy to comply. This took care of one of the goons, leaving the guy without a drawn gun for the party to defeat.

Most of what happened with "Grandma" was improv. I didn't want her to be overtly "evil", but I also knew that she wouldn't want to be trapped in an urn again. While the players bantered I started making up a ritual (we called it "lesser banishment") that the party would need to complete in order to trap Grandma. I wasn't sure if we'd get to use the ritual, and I was completely prepared for the players to comply with Grandma's request to take over the body of one of the study-group members. Lately my players have been pretty cruel.

As Heather's interactions with Grandma progressed, it became apparent that the players were going to go the route of "do-gooders." I needed to put some polish on that ritual, and had to make it more interesting than just a simple Smarts roll. I believe it was Alex's character Chad, that went on his iPhone to search for banishment rituals on a witchcraft website. Alex made the roll, and someone (I can't remember who!) remarked that the party would need some candles, chalk, and a ouija board.

Bingo!

I agreed with the players that "that" was exactly what they needed. Adam joked that Brody had a ouija board in his SUV. "For sure. You definitely have a ouija board in your SUV," I replied.

Why not?

This of course led to Brody having to deal with the storm, hail, and oncoming tornado, which was a fun change up in the action.

I think my favorite part of the evening was how the ritual had to be cast. The one caveat that I added to the ritual was that a bottle of the spirit's favorite alcohol had to be consumed. Typically you'd have the braniac player character making the ritualism roll, but the party needed someone experienced at keg-stands to down that entire bottle of chablis. So we had Brody the frat boy casting the ritual over a chalk outline and some candles. Just a great moment.

One more admission. At a point in the ritual I told the players that they needed the correct spelling of Grandma's name. They found out online that it was Lucile, but it was spelled two ways. Sometimes Lucile, others Lucille, and I forced Adam to choose. He went with one "L" and I said the ritual succeeded.

Spoiler: that was just for tension... I was going to have it succeed either way.

Parting Thoughts

I had a terrific evening on Thursday, and really enjoyed playing with this group. The game was funny when it needed to be, with just the right amount of tension. I really enjoyed role-playing Grandma, who I imagined was one part cookie baker, and one part serial killer.

Adam, Alex, and Andrew, as always you are welcome at my table (virtual or in-person) anytime!

Do you own East Texas University? Have you tried using the Adventure Generator? How did it work for you? Have you used similar generators in other games?

We'd love to hear your stories!

Cypher System Fantasy - Ardeyn - Session 1

Shaking her head in a state of utter confusion, Sister Sariety quickly surveyed her whereabouts.  She was stood in a poorly lit alley, surrounded by twelve humans, an ugallu (lion-humanoid), and a qephilim (jackel humanoid).  Eight of the humans were armed with clubs, daggers, and bucklers.  Standing in front of the sister, behind a small food cart, a laughing human held up a pair of flasks.  Not sure how she got there, and barely able to remember who she was, Sister Sariety casually approached the man behind the food cart.

“I guess I’ll have to give you another!” the man shouted, tossing one of the flasks at the holy woman’s feet.  Upon striking the ground the bottle shattered, splashing caustic liquid all over Sister Sariety’s legs, and the adjacent ugallu’s fur.  As the sister reared back in pain, the armed humans began to shout offensive warcries while moving inward, attacking the unarmed men and humanoids.  Startled, Sister Sariety fell into the massive lion-man, who backhanded her while baring angry fangs.  Apparently, while not overtly hostile, the ugallu was in a mood, and rightly so.

Zamani was a devout ugallu monk, and typically remained calm, even while in battle.  But his last memory was of standing outside a massive fortress, easily three hundred feet in height.  Was he in the fortress?  Could this alley be a part of the structure?  Why did he come to this place?  It was no matter, for at the moment the monk found himself fending off multiple attackers.  The woman he had just struck started talking to him.

“Zamani, Zamani, do you not remember me?” she said calmly.

The lion-man still did not recognize the robed woman, but did not believe her to be a threat.  Eager to settle a score with the bottle-throwing alchemist, Zamani charged forward fists raised.  The woman cheered the monk on, offering encouragement and words of wisdom as his wind-bound fists struck flesh.  The alchemist stumbled backwards through the wall itself.  An illusion, thought Zamani, now dispelled and revealing another alleyway.  The alchemist was about to lob his other flask at the ugallu when, from out of nowhere, a young griffin flew by and snatched it out of his hands.  Without a viable weapon to use against a skilled elemental monk, the alchemist turned and started to run.

“Go get him!” Sister Sariety shouted at Zamani.  Although he appreciated the enthusiasm, the monk needed no prodding.

Shenuesh, the brutish man from the Green Wilds, wasn’t sure if he was facing eight foes, or a dozen, or perhaps everyone else in the alley.  He wasn’t about to figure it out by trial and error.  Using his bestial brawn, Shenuesh leaped high into the air, hoping to land on one of the adjacent buildings’ roofs.  But mid-flight the warrior-adept realized that the roofs of the buildings were only two feet from the “sky”.  Although it appeared to be night, the sky was merely an illuminated ceiling.  Course correcting in the air, Shenuesh slid into the gap between roof and ceiling, while drawing his bow.  He would rain harsh death upon all those who opposed him… once he could remember who was friend and not foe.

Ever the fool, Yaren wasn’t sure if foul magic caused his mental malady or perhaps a bottle of questionable stout from the Addled Slugger.  Still, he was surrounded by street-gangers, and he had a sword, so why not split a few heads from their bodies?  Drawing his blade, Yaren grinned and began doing what he did best.

Even if Milja the Ranger didn’t recognize any one of the humans surrounding her, she could never forget Lusia.  Her faithful griffin cub was more than just a pet; it was her bond-beast, a creature that would forever be bound to the qephilim outlander.  Milja’s excitement at seeing her beloved friend pilfer the vile alchemist’s flask waned, however, as she realized that Lusia was coming in too fast!  Although Milja commanded Lusia to retrieve the bottle, she wanted it returned to her hand… not her feet.  Unfortunately something was lost in the qephilim to griffin translation.

The bottle of strange liquid tumbled onto the ground and broke into thousands of shards below Milja legs, creating a sheet of impossibly cold ice.  Milja fell on her back almost instantly, the frost burning her flesh and chilling her bones.  As the qephilim outlander struggled to get back to her feet, she noticed that Lusia was fluttering above her head, looking at her master quizzically.

Gazzim's day could’ve gone much, much better.  Leader of the Embermark gang, the skilled alchemist was hoping that the sister and her troupe of foolish minions would be easy marks.  Why else would someone consider coming down such a dangerous alley?  He had to assume that they were just completely stupid.  The mental scrambling gas may have disrupted the holy women and her crew, but only momentarily.  Now Gazzim was climbing for his life, hoping to get away from the terrible ugallu following him.  There was a brief moment when Gazzim thought he’d make it to safety too, but the robed monk was too fast, too agile to be outrun.

At least Gazzim had one more trick up his sleeve, one last power that he had saved for just this occasion, if only he…

[The alchemist is torn free from the metal pipe he is climbing by a burst of wind-energy blasted from Zamani’s glowing fist.  The man falls to his death and breaks his neck.  Zamani the monk jumps off the building, lands next to the corpse, and walks away.  Cue the music and title.]

Episode 1: Dream Patrol

As Milja finally chipped the last of the ice from her leather leggings, her bond-beast Lusia returned from her hunt.  The young griffin carried a severed head in her claws, the neck viciously torn free from unwilling shoulders.  That poor ganger sure went the hard way, the qephilim thought to herself.  Despite the pain in her back, at least Milja ended up with less long term aggravation than poor Yaren, who was still picking caltrops out of his boots.  When the surviving gang members retreated, those who hadn’t fallen to Yaren or Shenuesh, they dropped caltrops and marbles in their wake, hoping to deter any pursuers.

Lucky for Lusia that the caltrops had no effect on wings!

After the battle, the troupe of ne’er-do-wells started remembering what had occurred just a few minutes before the fight.  Most importantly, they remembered Sister Sariety’s offer.  The sister was something of a celebrity here on Level Thirty-Three of the Citadel Hazurrium.  Sister Sariety gained her fame by healing injured free company adventurers in the name of the Maker.  In fact, few matched her divine abilities.

Zamani was already in Sister Sariety’s employ when she first came to the citadel, having been freed from bondage by the Charming Speaker several months earlier.  Shenuesh, a well-known sark-hunter, and Milja the Ranger were sought out by Sister Sariety, as they both came in high regard by local free adventuring companies.

And then there was the foolish Yaren, who responded to an advertisement for adventuring laborers posted by the sister at the Addled Slugger.  While Sister Sariety was not inclined to hire the unassuming human, she could always use an extra sword.

After stripping the Embermark ganger bodies for gear and arcane trinkets, the party found their way to the Common Market.  It was too late to sell their newfound items, but at least the Addled Slugger was still open for business.  The sister, her ex-slave bodyguard, and three newly hired adventurers entered the old building and found a seat at a nearby table.

Well known on Level Thirty-Three as a pub catering to old soldiers, the Addled Slugger hosted weekly pugilism bouts in the basement.  Yaren’s ability to take a few hits to the head and outlast his opponents made him a solid bet for local gamblers.  Once the warrior sat down at the table, a fellow patron made sure all of his drinks, and those of his friends, were covered.

Beverages in hand, Sister Sariety pulled out a scroll and began to read the mission that she had been assigned by the Black Moon Explorers.  She was to lead a “Dream Patrol” along the Path of the Dead, a long wall comprised of tightly packed crypts and catacombs winding its way from the Citadel Hazurrium far to the west.  The patrol was scheduled to begin by the next evening at catacomb “1177” twenty-two miles west of the citadel.  Not wanting to cover that entire distance in a single day, the party agreed to attempt the first five miles that very night.

But first Sister Sariety wanted to sell a small wand she carried.

Finding a black market buyer was not difficult, especially in the dark corners of the lowest level of the citadel.  The wand allowed control over another’s mind for a few brief moments, causing them to become receptive to suggestion.  An off duty guard was looking for just such a device, perhaps to use on a young woman that caught his eye.  Zamani, as always, accompanied Sister Sariety, and observed the transaction.  The ugallu monk noticed a slight hesitation from the sister at making the deal with the guard, but the pause was shorter than he would’ve expected.

The evening walk along the wall was quiet and unremarkable.  A gentle rain began just twenty minutes into the march, but by midnight the storm had become torrential.  Although Milja and Shenuesh both carried tents that could protect the entire party from the weather, the risk of lightning forced the group to consider other options.  Milja set out to find a cave, and succeeded!  Just a few minutes’ walk south of the Path of the Dead was an abandoned mine-shaft.  Once the tents were assembled, the party settled down for a welcome rest.

Zamani had first watch, and was about to wake Shenuesh for the second when he smelled something in the air: human flesh and jackdogs.  As he quietly roused the team an old man called out.

“What are you doing in my mine?” the man shouted.  An old hermit who could not be seen ordered the party to leave his abode, or be forever sealed by a large boulder he would force over the entrance.  It was obvious that some kind of heavy stone rested above the entrance to the mine, but the team could not make out the size.  The man insisted that there were other entrances, and that he would have no problem finding an alternate route into the complex, once the party was long dead from starvation, asphyxiation, or any other kind of terrible death that could come in a mine.

Sister Sariety started negotiating with the hermit, hoping to make some kind of deal.  Perhaps an iron-shod quarterstaff, taken from a dead alchemist, would make for a handsome trade?  The hermit seemed amenable to the fast talking, and finally revealed himself.  He was certainly old, clad in rain-soaked rags and clutching a simple staff.  Shenuesh grabbed the quarterstaff, and moved towards the hermit.  Instead of making the transaction, however, Shenuesh used an arcane implement to encase both he and the hermit in a cube of pure energy.

The old man screamed in fear as he watched Shenuesh transform from human into werejackal!  The rest of the party witnessed an explosion of blood and gore within the cube, as the hermit’s body splattered all throughout the glowing transparent walls.  Some had to look away, while others simply waited for the cube to dissipate.

An hour after invoking the cypher’s power, Shenuesh emerged from the cube, the blood licked clean from his tan fur.

Quotes

"Awww, you can keep the rest of that." Milja to Lusia, after the griffin returnd with the gang member’s head.

"What did you do to me?  This feels great!  Can you do that again?" - Zamani to Sister Sariety once combat concluded.

"Come here so I can pummel you." - If Shenuesh used a ray emitter of command, this is what he would say according to Jeremy.

Jim - "How far into the cave are you going?"
Frank - "Not quite as far as they went in the Hobbit."

Bonus Features

I wanted to start this blog post out “in media res” because that is the same way we began the evening.  Mid-conversation, while we were joking about non-game related stuff, I called for an initiative roll.  Given that this was the first adventure of a new campaign, and no one had really introduced their characters, I was asked by several players if I was serious.

I was totally serious, or as my daughters would say, "totes serious."

Before the opening scene the alchemist chucked a mind-scrambling cypher at the party, causing them all to become disoriented and confused.  I thought “what better way to confuse a party than to start the adventure in a real state of confusion?”  The gimmick seemed to work, and I’m very impressed at how far some of the players took the experience.  During combat I would allow each player to make a Difficulty 4 Intellect check to remember their allies.  Some characters, like Sister Sariety, picked up on this fast.  Others, like Shenuesh, were confused for much of the encounter.

I hope to play around with more in-game gimmicks during this campaign, so stay tuned.

Also, if you have any crazy suggestions, send them my way…

… just do it in private so my players don’t know!

Disney Crawl Classics - When You Wish Upon a Starless Sea - Part Two

Father of the Year

Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG lets you and your family create some very special bedtime stories!

You may remember, several weeks back, when our family gathered around a table for a Disney Character “Draft” as part of our Disney Crawl Classics adventure.  Twenty different Disney Characters in all, each with randomly generated stats, quivered in fear (despite being figments of our collective imagination) as they prepared to embark on +Harley Stroh's epic Sailors on the Starless Sea.

Or as we like to call it: “When You Wish Upon a Starless Sea.”

In a little over two hours of gameplay we made it through the first part of the adventure, wrapping up just after discovering the stairwell heading down towards the sea itself.  Six characters were dead: Quasimodo, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Doc the Dwarf, Aladdin, Professor Doofenshmirtz, and Alice (from Wonderland).  Despite all the craziness in our session, all three children were interested in finishing the adventure.

It has been a busy month, so we weren’t able to play DCCRPG again until last night.  As a family we were all fairly exhausted from Saturday’s day-long yard sale and Sunday’s back-to-school shopping.  We didn’t even have dinner until 8:30pm, and finally sat down to game just after 9pm.

Way to go Walls Family, in getting those kids back on a school bedtime schedule!

I promised +Jennifer Walls that we only had another hour or so left in the adventure, especially knowing the way my family blasts through quests, so she let the game go forward. Perhaps it was the time of night, or maybe just the general mood of the kids, but last night’s game felt decidedly darker than our first session.

I am fairly certain that Evie would agree with me…

When You Wish Upon a Starless Sea, Part Two

Following the epic battle with the beastmen and their champion, our ragtag party of commoners was more than eager to completely eradicate all evil from the keep.  A stairwell to the north awaited the group, the sounds of distant drums echoing through the stony corridor.  Bufort took point, spear in hand, and carefully descended into the underworld below.  After several dozen feet the brutish bully came across a few stray gold coins. Pocketing the money, Bufort poked about, revealing a secret doorway.  On the other side of the portal a ransacked room contained three overturned chests and some spare coins.

“It’s a trap!” cried Snow White, who convinced the party to leave the room alone.  Bufort shrugged and continued leading the descent.

[When I say “Snow White” I mean my wife Jennifer, as Snow was one of her characters.]

A few dozen more feet down the long stairwell and the party came across a long room with a murky pool of water in the center.   A pair of ornate murals depicting scenes of battle and sacrifice decorated the eastern and western walls, and on the northern end of the chamber an ancient doorway led to another stairwell going down.

“Hmm, that doesn’t look good,” exclaimed Snow White.

Glancing in the pool, Snow couldn’t see a bottom, so she slapped the back of her pig forcing it into the water.  The poor creature splashed about until finding its way to the edge of the pool.  Although it didn’t seem to be injured, the pig’s thrashing caused a single skull with two glowing eye sockets to bob to the surface of the water.

Grabbing a stick Mickey pocked the skull and fished it out.  To determine whether or not weird artifact was cursed, Mickey poked the pig in the face with the skull repeatedly.  When the pig seemed to have a negative reaction to getting smacked with a wet skull, Mickey’s face went grim.

“It must be cursed,” the mouse murmured.  Due to his chaotic alignment, and the fact that he was already wearing the Chaos Medallion taken from the beastman champion earlier,  Mickey mounted the skull on a stick and proceeded to carry it forth towards the staircase.  The mouse didn’t seem at all unnerved that the skull’s glow intensified the closer the party traveled into the underworld.

[As you will find out very soon, there came a point when Jen decided Mickey was some kind of dark and unholy sorcerer mouse.  This may have been that point, but I really didn’t see it coming.  Cooper will have a hand in “sealing” Mickey’s damned fate.]

After several more minutes descending the staircase the party finally came to the bottom of the tunnel.   The stairs led to a small beach, overlooking a massive subterranean cavern.  Thousands of feet across, and nearly two-hundred feet high, the cavern’s defining feature was a small, black, underground sea.  On the far side of the enormous chamber the party could make out a dimly illuminated ziggurat with a brighter glow at its peak.  The sound of the drums was far more intense on the beach, and the troupe could almost make out shrieks and wails accompanying the thumping percussion.

About fifty feet offshore a single longboat floated in the water.  The vessel’s bow was carved into a dragon, and several oars could be seen on the deck.   Pinocchio noticed that an alter rested at the edge of the beach, just before the waves, and that an unlit candle sat upon the alter.  Grabbing one of the party’s lit torches Pinocchio lit the candle.   Immediately the boat started to rock and move, eventually beaching itself right in front of the party.  Pinocchio hopped aboard, as did Mickey, Flynn Rider, Snow White, and Merida.

But not everyone was excited for an underground boat ride.  Jasmine, Rapunzel, Phineas, Ferb, and Bufort were all boycotting the trip.   It took several minutes of discussion before the five could be convinced that the party needed to stick together.  After all the effort to get to this terrible place there was no going back.

[Perhaps I should’ve given Evie and Cooper more credit.  After describing the boat and the water, my two youngest children (ages 9 and 5) both exclaimed that they weren’t going any further.   I took several votes to see who was going, because at first each of the kids were going to let at least one of their characters get on the boat.   Even when I ran this adventure for “grown ups” earlier this year we had some dissent in the ranks, and several characters stayed back and survived because of their caution.  Eventually everyone agreed to go along for the ride.]

The cavern was incredibly dark, and the party’s torches did a poor job illuminating the murky surface of the water, so no one noticed the tentacles following the longboat until it was almost too late.  With a splash one of the black tendrils roared out of the waves, lashing onto the boat’s bow.  Hoping that the creature attached was just hungry, Pinocchio grabbed some of his chicken meat and tossed it into the water.   When this didn’t satisfy the beast’s belly, Snow White took one look at the party’s pig and then kicked the beast into the waves.  But for the lawful animal trainer, performing this kind of sacrifice to an ungodly creature of chaos would cause terrible repercussions later.

[I considered this a sacrifice to chaos by a lawful character, so I stripped 1d4 points of Luck away from Jen’s character.  The gods were firm but fair this time, but should Snow White perform another ritual of chaos there would be more serious consequences.  Mwa ha ha ha ha!]

As the longboat approached the ziggurat the sound of the drums grew louder and louder.  The party could make out beastmen leading poor human villagers up a great ramp towards a fiery inferno blazing at the top of the pyramid-like structure.  There was only one way onto the ziggurat, a simple sandbank near an escalating ramp.

Mickey believed that his own dedication to chaos, along with all of his “chaos bling”, would most certainly gain the beastmen’s favor.  Jumping off of the ship Mickey landed right in front of several goat-headed creatures.

“Behold, I am one of you!” the mouse shouted, pointing to his Chaos Medallion and gripping the brightly glowing skull-stick.

Three of the beastmen did not seem impressed, and while the rest of the creatures were greatly confused, this trio hefted their spears and lobbed them at the wizard’s apprentice.  Mickey dodged two of the javelins but took one to the neck.  The mouse fell face forward as he bled out on the sandy ziggurat’s ramp.

As the rest of the party looked on with terror, Phineas and Ferb reached into their sack of morbid goodies and pulled out… some extra skin.

[Again, this is a Cooper Intrusion!  My 5 year old son said that he had a lot of extra skin in a bag that could be used to “fix” Mickey.   I decided to use the idea.]

Snow White grabbed the skin and jumped off the boat, draping it over Mickey’s body.  Snow White then asked the forces of chaos to help this poor, dying mouse.

[Do you remember that part about Snow White dealing with gods of chaos?]

An eerie green smoke started to pour out of the skull’s mouth as the spare skin wrapped Mickey’s lifeless body in a cold, wet embrace. Slowly Mickey began to rise, his eyes glowing red, while Snow White screamed in agony. Piece by piece, the animal trainer turned to ash, her entire form eventually blowing into the air.

Mickey looked out and shouted, "ha ha!"

The age of Dark Mickey was at hand!

[For some reason, at this point Carrie decided that Merida fell in love with Mickey.]

[What a wickedly delightful bedtime story!]

Apparently Dark Mickey rise gave the beastmen a bit of a pause, as they all stepped aside and allowed the wizard’s apprentice to ascend the ramp.  Quickly the rest of the party gathered behind their new “leader”, save for Jasmine and Flynn Rider.  Unfortunately for that pair, this was a poor choice.  The beastmen may have had some respect for Dark Mickey, but they had no problem slaying the noble princess and outlaw compatriot.

[I warned Evie and Jen about splitting the party.  Evie was especially upset about this as Jasmine was her “preferred character” of the two she had left.  She didn’t want to hand over Jasmine’s character sheet, and told me that she didn’t want me to turn the sheet into a tombstone, as I do with the rest of the dead characters.   I told her I wouldn’t turn it into a tombstone.  So when she handed over Jasmine I just tore the sheet to pieces.   I should get the father of the year award!]

At the top of the ziggurat the remaining members of the party assembled around a beastman shaman and three of his guards.   Dark Mickey, Phineas, Ferb, Bufort, Rapunzel, Merida, and Pinnochio were all that was left of the original team tasked by Charlemagne to deal with this terrible threat.   The shaman hoisted high over his head an effigy of a chaos lord, and then cast it into a massive flaming pit at the center of the pyramid.  Almost immediately the flaming chaos lord effigy rose to life, and started to crawl out of the pit.  The three beastmen were all struck with fear after gazing upon Dark Mickey’s glowing eyes, and Rapunzel quickly struck down the shaman in one mighty blow.

But the Chaos Lord simply let out a terrible laugh and moved forward with a great spiked flail.

That’s when Dark Mickey sprung to life!  The small, fiendish mouse-lord charged the Chaos Lord pushing it into the flames.  But before Dark Mickey fell to his death, his new admirer Merida reached out and grabbed the mouse’s hand.  She too was about to tumble into the fiery pit but then Phineas took hold of Merida, pulling everyone to safety.

[It was the end of the adventure and I wanted to end everything on an upswing, so I was really trying to let the kids win.  Unfortunately the rolls were terrible.  Dark Mickey failed his reflex save to not fall into the fire, and then Merida failed her own reflex save.   I let Phineas make a final attempt… but he too failed.  That’s when I told Cooper he could burn some luck, which he did, and so “happily ever after…”]

Once the Chaos Lord sank to the bottom of the pit the entire structure, and surrounding cave, began to collapse.  The party ran to the bottom of the ziggurat, Phienas and Ferb scooping up what little treasure they could, and made it to the longboat just in time.  As the ceiling and fortress above plummeted into the waters, a great wave washed the longboat through a small crack in the wall, a portal to somewhere… else.

The End?

Not Jasmine!

Judge's Commentary

There were several moments while running this adventure when I wondered how much my kids were enjoying Dungeon Crawl Classics, although at the end of both sessions all three expressed an interest in playing again… perhaps after another campaign.  I was somewhat relieved, especially after Evie’s difficulty with losing Jasmine.  I was very clear with Carrie, Evie, and Cooper before our first session back in July that character death in DCCRPG was far more prevalent than in the other games they play.  I should’ve reiterated this fact before last night’s game but I forgot, mostly because of the time.

Interestingly enough, this was the first time that I saw a distinct age gap in gaming between Carrie (11) and Evie (9).  Carrie had no problem handing over characters, although she has played previous games of DCCRPG with our local game club, the Norwin Game Knights, without her sister.  Evie was a bit more attached, and saddened at the losses, even if the characters were described early on as “expendable.”  Cooper simply refused to let his characters die.

Still, we had a great time playing DCCRPG as a family, and I think some valuable lessons were learned during our quest… somewhere.

I wonder what the kids thought...

Player Commentary

Question:  What did you think of our Disney Crawl Classics experience?
  • Carrie:  "It was awesome, except the parts where the character died.  I didn't like when Quasimodo died climbing over a wall."
  • Evie:  "I think its cool and I think its a good game that is a mix of 'oh my gosh, I think I'm gonna beat this' and 'uh, your character just died, give me your character sheet so you can make a tombstone.'"
  • Cooper:  "I loved it."

Question:  What was your favorite moment from the game?
  • Carrie:  "My favorite part was when Snow White went over to Dark Mickey, and Snow White dissolved, and Dark Mickey came up and was like 'ha ha!'"
  • Evie:  "I kinda liked when Cooper was like 'here's the extra skin', and the part last game when he was like 'here's an extra heart.'  He was Phineas and Ferb and he had a lot of stuff.'"
  • Cooper:  "When you tore Jasmine apart."
  • Evie:  "That was kinda mean!"
  • Cooper:  "Well that was my favorite part!"

Question:  What game would you like to play next?
  • Carrie:  "I'd like to play more of The Strange, and I want to dress up as my character again."
  • Evie:  "Either X-Wing or Numenera."
  • Cooper:  "I wanna play Dixit!"
