My Gaming Books Smell

My books smell.

All of them.

To clarify, I am referring to my role-playing books.
My paper back novels all just smell the same.
But my role-playing game manuals give off some kind of imagination pheromone.
This is possible, as they are all alive.

To be sure, this is not a bad smell.
These strong sturdy books, some with flashy covers, while others dirty and frail, are all so very unique.
As I've grown older, I can identify many without using my eyes.
Just my nose.

I pondered this today while having coffee, enjoying a reread of Savage Worlds Deluxe.
Closing my eyes, the scent reminded me of the very first time I opened that very same book.

May 2012.  Atlantic City.  A work conference.  A boring hotel room.

Imagination pheromones.

Most likely something Studio 2 Publishing puts in their special ink.
Today I realized that my Savage Worlds books actually smell like Savage Worlds.

How perfect!

Other books on my shelf have their own distinctive perfumes.

Some, like Firefly or The Strange, are fragrant, cheerful, and new.
They transport me somewhere completely unfamiliar, yet exciting and wonderful.
It's a new car smell... for books.

While I carefully clutch the older books the smells get more complex.
Fine wine.

My Hackmaster 4th Edition Players Handbook, for instance, has a perfume of pungent ink mixed with unbalanced game mechanics and something else.
There is just a hint of my parents basement in Delaware.
Several years ago we almost moved to Delaware, and closer to my mom and dad.
I remember sealing this book up with a bunch of others to be kept in their house for the move.
We didn't move.
Eventually I had to bring them all back.

Of all my books, the most classic smell is that of my Alternity Players Handbook.
Alternity is the first game I learned completely on my own.
In college I taught Alternity to anyone willing to play.
Alternity was mine.

I recall reading those pages for the first time while waiting for a freshman history class. Crafting voyages across the stars in a dark and disheveled college apartment bedroom. There is still a slight scent of incense in the Mindwalking section.
That old book smell is certainly present, and it makes me sad.
One day these pages will certainly fall out, and the book will no longer be of use at a table. Not that I play Alternity anymore.

But one day again I may.

I hope.

Yes, I could certainly identify my books by their smell alone.
Some smell like tomorrow, while others of today.
The very best smell like yesterday or the day before.

Yet sadly, too many smell like never again.

My favorites, of course, smell like forever.

A Living 4 Crits New Year

Happy New Year, blog readers!

2015 was a fantastic year here on Living 4 Crits.  Lots of new blog posts and a brand new YouTube channel!  Living 4 Crits Late Knights took up part of my summer, and a few weeks ago Marc Plourde, Ryan Chaddock, and I kicked off Cypher Live.

We got to play a ton of new games, and explore new campaign settings.  We used The Strange to run a Sherlock Holmes/Star Wars/Dark Sun mega-adventure.  We ran multiple Savage Worlds campaigns, leading to fun cosplay moments in the far reaches of The Last Parsec as well as on the high seas of 50 Fathoms.  We slaughtered a dozen Disney characters on a Starless Sea in Dungeon Crawl Classics.

Great times!

We also learned a few new games this past year, and everyone's obsession with Star Wars was obvious.  Evie and I became addicted to the X-Wing Miniatures Game, and I finally tried Star Wars: Edge of the Empire.  I even got to play Age of Rebellion, and by year's end purchased that red core book to add to my collection.

But there were other games that we learned.  The Cypher System Rulebook gave me another way to play one of my favorite systems.  I made a goblin named Buckets in Shadow of the Demon Lord.  As an extension of last year's Quattro con Carnage experiment, Marc Plourde ran Dragon Age.  Jennifer and I got to try Fantasy Age with Marc at Gen Con, in a two-part series of pickup sessions…

… Gen Con…

… holy crap, Gen Con 2015 was amazing!

So I gotta be honest, 2016, you have a LOT to live up to!  I hope you're taking notes, 2016, because I have a few requests:

1)  I'd really like to "play" a few games of Savage Worlds.  I'm always on the GM's side of the screen, and I've only played this game once… ONCE!  That's a damned shame!  While finding time to join a full campaign is challenging, I'll be on the lookout for one-shots.

2)  Okay, after just making the statement that I want to play Savage Worlds more, I also need to mention that I'd really like to experience my two favorite Savage World settings with grownups this year:  Accursed and The Last Parsec.  Playing with kids is cool… but playing with adults could be awesome, and I've never had that opportunity.

3)  I want to teach more people about the awesomeness of Numenera and The Strange… and I would love to use the adventure books "Weird Discoveries" and "Strange Revelations" to do so!  I haven't had much luck running Asset Team adventures at brick & mortar locations, so maybe I'll be able to convert more folks online.

4)  I've been running a lot of Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG at our local gaming events with the Norwin Game Knights.  I want to keep the DCCRPG'ing going, not only with my own sessions, but by getting some of my new "tween" players to start judging events.  For our last two club sessions we've had multiple RPG's running at once, and I'd love to see three, four, or five tables filled with players.

5)  Finally, I'm thrilled that I'll be at Gen Con 2016 with an entire entourage.  Me, Jen, the kids, and my parents will all be in attendance!  Planning has already begun, and we're already getting excited.

So that's it for my New Years rant.  I hope you've all made some great gaming-related New Years resolutions…

… and if you have, and they match my short list, let me know.  Perhaps we can work together to make 2016 an EPIC year in gaming!

Living 4 Crits - Putting our Gamer Family on YouTube!

We Have a YouTube Channel!

That’s right ladies and gentlemen… you can now watch Living 4 Crits on your TV, computer, or smart-phone!

I’ve had a terrific year writing this blog, and I greatly appreciate all of the wonderful feedback, stories, and suggestions that my readers have shared each week.  While I have no intention of slowing down, I wanted to get my family more involved in the process.  After all, for me, my wife, and my children the true definition of “Living for Crits” is spending quality time together by embracing creativity and imagination.

Or, to put it another way: “Min-maxing each day as a family!”

But what to do?

I already had this blog, and although I flirted with starting a podcast, that’s just not me.  We needed to go bigger!  My daughter Carrie had been asking for quite some time to expand her own presence on social media.  Specifically, she was interested in creating a YouTube account.  Given her interest, and my own search for another creative outlet, Carrie and I decided to co-host a YouTube show:

Living 4 Crits (aka James August Walls… working on that part...)

Our goal on Living 4 Crits will be to showcase and discuss all of our favorite games, from role-playing games to video games.  We may even discuss how different kinds of games may interact.

Ever consider mixing concepts from Terraria into your Dungeon Crawl Classics campaign?

Why not!?!

We will definitely be exploring the differences in gaming culture across our two represented generations… or more if I could talk a grandparent into showing up on the show!  Actually, after shooting only a few episodes I’ve learned quite a lot about the generational differences between my daughter and myself.  For you as a viewer, this means you’ll regularly receive two distinct viewpoints on the topics we discuss.

In addition we will share how we game as a family, and give tips, tricks, and examples of how you too can come to the table with your children and/or parents.

If you haven’t stumbled across our channel yet, we’ve filmed four videos so far:

  • Episode 0: A very rough introduction, more of a test really to see that we could pull this off!
  • Numenera  Strand:  Our support for the recent (and fully funded) Kickstarter.
  • Old School’s in Session:  A look at what the term “Old School” means to an 11 year old versus a 35 year old.
  • Creepers Bunnies and Cyphers:  We discussed the games we've played in the past week, including Minecraft, King of Tokyo, and Numenera.

We promise there will be more to come:  vlogs, reviews, actual plays, commentary, and more!  We are also planning some collaboration with another YouTuber, my incredible cousin and avid gamer Beanie Bambino!  If you have any suggestions, or would like to see us discuss specific topics or types of games, please let us know.

If you enjoy what you see, be sure to like and subscribe.

We’ll be seeing you on the big screen!
