Mutant Friday Special - Session 1

(Photo by Shannon, featuring her dear plastic fish friend "Stephen")

A hot, mutated mess!

Over the next few months I'll be running a heck of a lot of Mutant Crawl Classics at some local conventions in eastern PA. Most notably PAX Unplugged and Save Against Fear. To fully prepare myself for these events, I wanted to run some playtests with local friends and family over the course of the next several weeks. Last night I tried the first of these playtests, and holy crap we had some challenges!

First and foremost, just prior to the start of the game, I had a weird allergic reaction. Not sure if something bit my lip, or if I was having a late food allergy reaction to the tempeh I had eaten, but the left side of my upper lip started swelling up. I also felt a bit of tightness in my mouth and throat, and I kinda freaked out. So I took a pair of Benedryl, and soldiered on.

Unfortunately, the two beers I had earlier in the night, coupled with the anti-histamine, really weighed on my stamina. About an hour into the game and I was getting sleepy. Two hours in I was really dragging. I was really struggling.

To make matters worse, my players (most notably my wife Jen) really derailed the adventure. Typically I can rebound from whenever players throw me curveballs, but last night my exhaustion got the better of me. Still, by the end of the game we had a good enough time to schedule next week's event, and hopefully I'll be steering clear of rogue insects and fermented soy beans.

Max mutants

Another interesting tidbit about last night's game was the near complete lack of pure strain human PC's. Take a look at our players and their 0-level characters:

  • Rachel
    • Barbara - Pure Strain Human
    • Spoompls - Mutant
    • Dankenstein - Plantient
  • Shannon
    • Randel - Mutant
    • Violet - Plantient
    • Tivian - Manimal
  • Jen
    • Yor Bestfrend - Manimal
    • Keila Kween - Mutant
    • Fajt Bastud - Mutant
  • Carrie
    • Coco - Mutant
    • Griffin - Manimal
    • Perry - Plantient
  • Evie
    • Heckboy - Mutant
    • Too-Xtruh - Mutant
    • AMP - Mutant

Check that count: 15 PC's, 8 mutants, 3 manimals, 3 plantients, and just 1 pure-strain human. What the heck?

Adventure Summary

For this session, I tried running The Museum at the End of Time by MCCRPG creator Judge Jim Wampler. This would mark the third time I had run the adventure, but first time that I twisted the setting to fit another version of Terra AD. In the adventure as written, the story takes place with PC's setting out across a great glowing desert in search of technology of the ancient ones. In my setting (which we should just call Mutant Paranoia Alpha for "reasons" that shall be disclosed later) the adventure begins in the small, jungle village of Portoa, part of the Clan of Cog and ruled by Chief Quelish.

The PC's were prepared to set out on their Rite of Passage, given to them by Chief Quelish. Their mission would be to travel out from the village, across the Snake River and into the Glowing Jungle. After passing beneath the sky road (a great stone road elevated above the ground by big pillars), they would possibly find some great structures created by the ancient ones, and more importantly, artifacts that would help defend Portoa from the rival village Shen.

The party crossed the river, and started moving through the jungle. Within an hour, they heard a yodeling. To help find the source, Spoompls sent out her psychic rat friend to look for the source. Sure enough, a half dozen shroom-head zombies waited for the party on the other side of some bushes. Shroom-head zombies were corpses of poor pure strain humans and mutants who had become infested by semi-sentient mushroom spore. The bodies were dead, but driven like vehicles by the mushroom colonies. The team could've quietly circumvented the shroom-head zombies, but instead Heckboy started blowing his conch trumpet. This sent the undead into a rage.

The zombies were far stronger than the village initiates expected. Untested in combat, mutant after mutant missed on their attack rolls against the undead. It wasn't until Too-Xtruhh offered a piece of shiny material to the zombies, that the fighting ceased. Once distracted, the team slinked away, continuing their trek through the jungle.

Next on their journey, the party found a weird green structure with a hole at its base. The hole lead to an enormous chamber hidden below the ground. This seemed like an obvious source of glory and riches. Perhaps within this chamber, fabulous artifacts of the ancient ones awaited, ripe to rival even those that could be found in the Citiadel far, far away.

Nope.

Yor was able to convince the party that there wasn't anything good here, and that they didn't have enough rope to climb down (even though they did), and the team skipped the hole.

I should note that this was the start of The Museum at the End of Time. Typically I could figure out a way to better pique the interest of the players to continue down the intended path. But the Benedryl/Beer combo was really killing me at this point, and my lip was still swollen. I was definitely off my game something fierce!

The party continued traveling until they hit a wall. A giant cliff that stretched high into the sky, past the clouds, and as far as the eye could see to the left and right. Spoompls sent out her rat, which discovered that within the cracks of the wall were a series of hidden pipes and tubes. Tinkering with the wall, a hovering viewscreen appeared.

Calling itself LARS, the hovering screen seemed disinterested in revealing any information to any of the characters at first. LARS stated that it was there to serve the "colonists". It stated that the PC's were "pets" and not colonists. But Too-Xtruhh's mutations were quite mild, and the near-human was able to convince the bot that he was a colonist. LARS revealed the following pieces of interesting information:

  • LARS stood for "Light Assistant Robotic Servant"
  • LARS was created to assist colonists
  • The world that the PC's lived on was referred to as "Habitat 3".
  • The four directions (north, south, east, and west) were referred to as Clock, Counter, Shield, and Bell).
  • Portoa village was Counter to the party's current facing. Shen was Bellward. The great Citadel was Counterbellward.

Eventually the party tried tinkering with the mechanisms of LARS and broke the bot. They continuously tinkered with it until it exploded killing a third of the party. Oops.

Around this time I was super sleepy and I tried calling it a night. I told the group that they had missed the main part of the adventure, and I was about to go into a coma. But I was prompted to keep going, so I revealed that the big green hole was the main part of the adventure. So the party backtracked. Not the most organic way to railroad the players, but oh well, I was so, so sleepy!

As to the actual adventure portion of The Museum at the End of Time, the party managed to climb down into the chamber. The climb cost Fajt Bastud his life, when he tried to act super cool to a fossilized dinosaur that he encountered during the descent. The chamber had five sets of doors, the two fossils, a lot of interesting scenes on the walls, and a dead, mummified corpse on the ground. The corpse yielded a pair of artifacts, one of which was destroyed (a gun) during investigation. The party recovered the comm badge though.

At this point, I let the PC's level up for our next session.

Father/Daughter MCCRPG - Hive of the Overmind - Part 2

All These Mutants

How did Judge Evie and I end up with all these mutation wielding player characters?

If you were to take a look at +Marc Plourde's Mutant Crawl Classics campaign and compare it with the one that I'm co-GM'ing with Judge Evie, you'd think that we used two completely different character generation tables. Here's the comparison of character classes:

Marc's Campaign:

Me and Judge Evie's Campaign:
  • 3 Mutants
  • 1 Manimal
  • 1 Shaman
  • 1 Rover
  • 1 Healer

So with Marc's game, there's barely ever a mutation getting used. Andy's plantient had multiple limbs, so he rolled that up early before we started. But in our game, every PC is lobbing mutation powers every fifteen seconds. Ella's character Wallace is particularly dangerous with her ability to completely take control over the minds of others (with Assimilation). The only downside to all of the mutations getting used was that the print copy of MCCRPG still isn't out, so I'm stuck with having to look everything up on my iPad. Oh well, we had a great game!

In case you are interested, I'll list out all of the mutations for each character later in this post.

Judge Evie was slowed down a bit during this game. She has an ankle injury, so she was stuck having to sit down, and spent much of the time taking lots of notes (so that she could write the recap) when she wasn't trying to kill player characters with terrible fumble results. But we still had an incredible time continuing +Julian Bernick's insect-laden 0-level funnel, Hive of the Overmind!

Want to know what happened last session? Here's the link:

Hive of the Overmind - Part 2

Recap by Guest Blogger, Evie Walls

At this point everyone was still in the hive, and they were all trying to get out of there. With Colossus only being four feet tall and Wallace having a head growing out of his chest, you can tell the party is doing great! Colossus takes the lead while the party walks down a long hallway.

Colossus meets an ant dude and says "how's it going?"

The ant dude shot back "get back to work!"

Ranno started laughing in a scary voice. The party slowly backed away while Ranno met another ant dude and then got SPIT TALKED.

Dun, dun, DUNNAH!

Ranno survived the spit talking though.

[Judge James' Note: "Spit Talked" was Judge Evie's idea of a fumble result. The PC, while talking with a drone, got some mind controlling saliva spit into their mouth.]

On the other hand, Dominic got controlled by a drone and started digging at a wall all because of a spit talker. Wallace tried to save Dominic by putting a fake memory into the ant man's mind. The memory was of Dominic being its boss! The ant man then describes the Overmind and the Queen to the party: "It's one of us with a TV above it."

The party then goes to speak with the Overmind.

At first the Overmind controlled Queen blasted the part with saliva, which ended up getting Dominic mind controlled again. But then Wallace used assimilation (and Ella rolled really high) and the queen fell under the mutant's control.

The party found a death ray pistol and an android head. The android head (X-52) told it's new master Nicky P. that they should take it to the chambers below the hive. Wallace used the queen's memory to unlock the doorway behind the chamber.

In the lower levels the party finds a room full of artifacts. In this chamber Nicky P. finds a six-pack of beer, and the rest of the party finds some additional gear.

In anther chamber the party finds an android laying on the ground with a pistol. The android gets into an argument with Nicky P.'s android head. The android head screams out "KILL HIM!" Colossus wants to do this, but Nicky P. calmly works everything out. The android on the ground is allowed to destroy the android head.

The legless android is named Y-4. Nicky P. befriends him, fixes his legs (fist bump), and finds out that the Overmind is keeping a rebellious android named Speculatron behind the door in the room. Y-4 makes a deal with Nicky P: agree to leave the hive without harming the Overmind, and the party will be given access to some incredible tech.

Y-4 takes everyone to a Nano Goo chamber. Some of the mutants try going into the goo, but it almost kills Dominic. Wallace gains a new mutation (heightened intelligence) and Era finds out that it doesn't work on pure strain humans.

Y-4 then takes the party to the final chamber, containing a small robotic ant creature.

"Halt! I am the Overmind!" it says.

The Overmind says that if the party leaves they will be given a Drill Tank that will take them into the center of the Earth if they want. Yay!

All eyes were on Nicky P. because he was on the side of the Overmind now. Nicky P. and Colossus give the Overmind a beer, and agree to leave. While leaving, Colossus starts to think up a plan to betray the Overmind and take over. There is a quick vote, and four of the characters try to over throw the Overmind.

The Overmind fires dart missiles at those who try to betray him, putting three to sleep. But he kills Colossus. The androids allow Nicky P. to take the sleeping characters and leave in the drill. But Colossus is then brought back to life, and his arms and legs are removed. He is transformed into a living battery to keep the Speculatron chamber powered forever.

Well we can say bye to him! Peace out!

Poor Colossus, forever transformed into a living battery to keep the Speculatron trapped.

Cypher vs. the Sky High Tower

Cypher the Shaman of ACHROMA

I've had several opportunities over the last year or so to be an over-the-top, radioactively gonzo Mutant Crawl Classics judge. Granted, most of these games have been one shots. I've run two sessions of Museum at the End of Time (by +Jim Wampler), three sessions of Nothing's Free in Ocean World (homebrew adventure), and just last week Judge Evie and I kicked off a father/daughter MCCRPG campaign starting with Hive of the Overmind (by +Julian Bernick). Many games, but I wanted more.

I wanted to try out Mutant Crawl Classics as a player!

Leave it to Judge +Marc Plourde to oblige. My good friend, player, and occasional GM (whenever he can pin me down) offered to run Assault on the Sky High-Tower, by +Jim Wampler, for me and the rest of our Banished to the Purple Planet crew. There was no way I was missing this event! As one of the co-hosts of the Glowburn Podcast, I relished the opportunity to sit on the other side of the Judge's Screen and get the full, mutated experience.

Assault on the Sky-high Tower is featured in the back of the Mutant Crawl Classics Role Playing Game rulebook, and is suite for either 15-20 0-level characters or 8 1st level characters. We ended up with four players, and Marc let us each bring a single 1st level character, backed up with a trio of 0-level fodder. So I thought i'd take a moment to talk about my little team.

After generating four 0-levels via the Purple Sorcerer Mutant Crawl Classics 0-Level Party Generator, I took a look at everyone's stats, hoping to gain some kind of advantage. Three of my four 0-levels would make suitable 1st level characters, but I wanted the best experience. This is the one that spoke to me:

Great stats, maxed out hit points, and a Pure Strain Human... I was all set to play a Shaman!

Cypher, 1st Level Shaman of ACHROMA, Hunter from the Clan of Cog
  • Strength 11, Agility 11, Stamina 14, Personality 14, Intelligence 15, Luck 9
  • Hit Points 10, AC 10
  • Wetware Programs: Invoke Patron (1/day), Security Override

Since ACHROMA is essentially Agent Smith from The Matrix, I wanted to have a name that I could draw from the movie series. Originally I went with Novo (kind of like Neo), but Neo and Agent Smith weren't the best of buds. Cipher (played by Joe Pantoliano in the movie) made much more sense. I swapped the "i" for a "y" as a little tribute to my other favorite RPG system. I think the coolest part of this character is how he has permanent "ACHROMA Over eyes" - sunglasses that are just glued to his face. Super badass!

Cypher has some pretty rad compatriots too.

All of those guys still have some 0-level characters left, but I don't keep track of minions' names. All in all we are a pretty Pure Strain Human heavy party, but I'm not complaining. Our plantient has an 18 Strength and multiple limbs!

We're about halfway through the adventure (I think), and Cypher is still going strong.  I drank some radioactive coffee and now have a permanently boosted Agility and Luck (both went up by one point). Unfortunately my three 0-level characters (Leondias, Frawg, and Slurps) didn't make it, and I just have the one-PC. But I have faith that Cypher will last until the end.  Our next game is early in November, and I can't wait to take MCCRPG out for another test drive.

Father/Daughter MCCRPG - Hive of the Overmind - Part 1

A New Mutation Forms

I've done a lot of adventure recaps on the Living 4 Crits blog post, but this series is going to be special. I'm not writing any actual adventure summaries. I guess technically I'll be writing part of the blog portion, and doing all the editing, but for this monthly series my daughter (the infamous Judge Evie) will be in charge of doing the actual "recap" for the adventures. You see, this new campaign isn't just mine, it's "ours."

She asked to write her parts out long hand.

Now that we've had a chance to thoroughly dig through the Mutant Crawl Classics Role Playing Game, Evie and I wanted to roll the game out in a campaign format. So we agreed to start running a monthly father/daughter, co-judged campaign for anyone interested at our Norwin Game Knights events. We'd have a fairly even split of game master duties: I'd take care of giving most of the scene overviews and adjudicating rules, and she'd take care of managing monsters and dishing out ad libbed craziness.

I know I do a lot of gushing about my family on this blog, and I'm sorry if I drive any of you crazy, but I can't help it. Seriously, this was one of the coolest games I've ever played, and not just because of it being a shared event between me and my daughter. Mutant Crawl Classics was such a wonderful game to run at the club! Of our eight players, five were seasoned Dungeon Crawl Classics players. But our young group (ages nine to fourteen), were absolutely enthralled by the post-apocalyptic gonzo of MCCRPG.

With all the Mutant Crawl Classics Kickstarter rewards flowing in right now, I really wanted to get cracking on the published adventures. So Evie and I have a plan. We kicked off the new campaign with +Julian Bernick's insectoid 0-level funnel, Hive of the Overmind, and we plan on moving through the rest of the published adventures one by one as the year progresses. I'm fairly confident that most of the players are along for the entire ride. By the end of the night, everyone was clamoring to roll up their mutations and pick out their pure strain human classes.

So far we have a pretty interesting cast!

Judge Evie striking fear into Evan's heart.

Hive of the Overmind - Part 1

Recap by Guest Blogger, Evie Walls

Everyone started out in an ant hive where this giant bee came in came in combat with them. This world is Terra AD! As they destroyed the monster they continued on. After a few fights, Ryan's character discovers a stone hoe. One second later, Fry Guy [Alex #2] and Ryan are bidding and fighting over a stone hoe. As they are each fighting over the hoe it breaks, so does Ryan's character's skull.

A few rooms later everyone hears "help, I'm drowning!"

Ryan sees a frog thing and immediately yells "those are my people!"

At the garbage room everyone started to explore. A lot of people got pretty cool things. Stone axes, paragon elixer, stim gum, but others were not so lucky Some people said "hello" to giant maggots, but others found plastic babies. Evan found a plastic baby, and slowly flipped it over. As soon as it said "mama" it was getting smashed into pieces by Evan.

In this process Cactilus dies a normal death from a giant maggot.

A few moments later the party came across a mucous bridge. Everyone made it across... except for Berry. Berry was walking (in a sack) across the bridge and closed his eyes to remember being awesome. As he opened his eyes he was walling into lava.

Well we can say "bye" to him. Peace out!

A couple minutes later everyone is fighting giant swarms of ant-men larvae. A lot of characters took damage during this time including Ella's character who took a hit of 2. During this adventure Ryan is being very "punny!" Ha, ha!

Anyways, these large swarms aren't done yet.

Fry guy's character starts to throw his gum at the ant men larvae. As they eat it, the swarms start to form one giant monster.

[Judge James' note: this whole encounter modification was definitely Evie's idea!]

This monster spits out goo acid that burns flesh with a 1d4 damage. While they are fighting this thing, the time ran out. Everyone leveled up and we were all ready for more next time.

Alternate Manimal Sub-Types

A Mutant's Best Friend

On this month's episode of Glowburn, I came up with an alternate Manimal Sub-Types in case judges and players want to embrace their inner canine. While we posted these in the show notes, I wanted to feature the list right here on my blog as well...

... what? You didn't listen to Glowburn this month yet!?!

Let's fix that... just follow this irradiated link.

Okay, on to the list:

Canine Manimals

  • Mechanics:  Canine Manimals have a terrific sense of smell that effectively allows them to “see” using their nose.  This means that they are never blinded unless both their nose and eyes are impaired.  But given the sensitivity of their noses, they are especially susceptible to any artifacts or other kinds of powers that can be breathed in.  Canine Manimals suffer a -1d on their Fortitude Saves vs. these kinds of attacks.
  • Alternate Canine Only Manimal Sub-Type Table for Dog Fans
  • Roll a d30, just like on the original Table 1-7
    • 1 - 3: Herding Group. Roll a d4
      • 1) Collie
      • 2) Corgi
      • 3) German Shepherd
      • 4) Shetland Sheepdog
    • 4 -6: Hound Group. Roll a d4
      • 1) Beagle
      • 2) Bloodhound
      • 3) Greyhound
      • 4) Rhodesian Ridgeback
    • 7 - 9: Non-Sporting Group. Roll a d4
      • 1) Bulldog
      • 2) Dalmatian
      • 3) Poodle
      • 4) Shiba Inu
    • 10 - 12: Sporting Group. Roll a d4
      • 1) Golden Retriever
      • 2) Irish Setter
      • 3) Labrador Retriever
      • 4) Weimaraner
    • 13 - 15: Terrier Group. Roll a d
      • 1) Bull Terrier
      • 2) Dandie Dinmont Terrier
      • 3) Pit Bull
      • 4) West Highland White Terrier
    • 16 - 18: Toy Group. Roll a d4
      • 1) Chihuahua
      • 2) Papillon
      • 3) Pug
      • 4) Shihtzu
    • 19 - 21: Working Group. Roll a d4
      • 1) Akita
      • 2) Boxer
      • 3) Rottweiler
      • 4) St. Bernard
    • 22 - 24: Designer Breeds. Roll a d4
      • 1) Cockapoo
      • 2) Goldendoodle
      • 3) Huskamute
      • 4) Puggle
    • 25 - 27: Wild Canines. Roll a d4
      • 1) Wolf
      • 2) Dingo
      • 3) Jackal
      • 4) Coyote
    • 28 - 30: Mutt!  Roll twice and combine the table. This result can be achieved more than once, and the PC keeps gaining additional breeds.
    • Hyper Mutts!
      • Mutts are created with a roll of a 28-30, with an additional breed tossed in randomly for each point of luck (or negative luck) modifier.
      • So having a Luck Modifier guarantees a Mutt, and rolling Mutt! just means more Mutt
