Celebrate International Tabletop Day 2016 with the Norwin Game Knights

What are you doing on April 30th?

If you are in the Pittsburgh area, you need to come meet up with the Norwin Game Knights as we gather together to celebrate...

International Tabletop Day 2016!

The Norwin Game Knights are proud to be hosting International Tabletop Day 2016 at the Penn's Woods Civic Association Building in North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania on Saturday, April 30th from 10am to 6pm.  We're only 20 minutes east of downtown Pittsburgh, and we've got players coming in from as far away as Canada and Delaware so far!

This will be our group's third celebration of this terrific, annual event, and we're very excited to spend eight hours doing what we do best:  playing, learning, and teaching great games!

The Penn's Woods Civic Association main building can hold up to 300 gamers, and we want to fill all those seats.

That's where you come in!

I know a lot of my friends and followers on Facebook, G+, and Twitter are here for my role-playing game blogging, and folks, we've got some great RPG'ing planned.  In past years there have been one or two game masters, but this year we've managed to either wrangle nearly ten!

If you show up to role-play, expect to find one of the following games:

Numenera (GM's Andrew Lyon & James Walls)
Cypher System (GM's Aidan Slakinski & Ray Slakinski)
No Thank You, Evil (GM Evelyn Walls)
Dungeon Crawl Classics (GM's Michael Bolam & Evan Blenko)
Metamorphosis Alpha (GM Michael Bolam)
Basic Fantasy RPG (GM Matthew Schuilenburg)
Savage Worlds (GM Craig McCullough)
Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition (DM Aidan Slakinski)

Most of the games will be family friendly, ages 10+.  No Thank You, Evil will be ages 5+.

Prepare Thyself

Villainous Scum - A Cypher System/Star Wars One-Shot

Wait... what?

Is this another Cypher System Star Wars post?  Didn't you just do one of these on Friday?

Yes...

... let me explain.

Too Much of a Good Thing?

Just two days ago I posted an adventure summary of my family's Star Wars role-playing game experience using Monte Cook Games' Cypher System Rulebook.  In a single short adventure we kicked off what I hope to be a brand new family campaign, starting on the Forest Moon of Endor.  But this wasn't the only Star Wars game I had prepared for the weekend.  After a very busy week at work I had planned a full weekend of Star Wars gaming...

... because seriously, you can never have enough Star Wars!

After wrapping up Saturday's blog post I got right down to business preparing for a Saturday evening of the Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures game.  Evie, Cooper, and I played for nearly three hours, as we test-drove our brand new Scum & Villainy ships.

When Sunday rolled around it was time for more Star Wars, and through the power of a brand new G+ community I was able to throw together a one-shot in no time!

Cypher System One-Shot Connection

Towards the end of MCG's Worlds of the Cypher System Kickstarter campaign, +Darcy Ross and +Jeremy Land offered to run demos and one-shots for backers.  I was inspired by Darcy and Jeremy's enthusiasm, so I threw my hat into the ring as well.  Once the campaign was over, I figured that we would need some kind of group to help coordinate all of these demos...

... and that's how the Cypher System One-Shot Connection was born!

The goal of the group is simple: for Cypher System fans to link up and run one-shots and demos for other gamers, especially those who've never had the opportunity to play.  Perhaps some of these one-shots will create new gaming groups, adventuring parties, and friendships for years to come.

Two years ago a similar group gathered for a short demo of The Strange... and some of us are still gaming today!

So if you're looking to play some more Cypher System games, from Numenera to The Strange to homebrew games out of the CSR, come check out our new group!

Our Cypher System Star Wars One-Shot

For our one-night, one-shot of Cypher System Star Wars, I pieced together an adventure using the following:

I don't do complete conversions.  I'm too lazy.  I also believe that nearly everything you need to run Star Wars with the Cypher System can be found in the Cypher System Rulebook, with a few tidbits from other Cypher sources.  If you're looking for my methods of running these kinds of games, the aforementioned link is what you want to follow.

Back in December I created six pre-gen characters for the Cypher System, originally intended for a special holiday weekend one-shot.  Well due to the flu that game never happened.  Tired of typical Star Wars goody-two-shoes types, I created the Villainous Scum as a team of mercenaries in the employ of the Empire.  Each character had a unique backstory, with connections to other characters, and a few possible possible twinges of the light side.

I'm a big believer in good maps.  Some game masters can run games right out of their brains, describing scenes perfectly with little to no use for a decent map.

I'm not one of these GM's.

True, it's rare that I set up a map for tactical gameplay, but if I'm going to have a group of players explore a starship, I want a deckplan ready to go.  That's where +Christopher West comes in!  Christopher has a fantastic series of sci-fi maps over at his Maps of Mastery website that you can pickup for your own game.  The adventure I threw together for last night's game (titled "Graverobber") was inspired by Christopher's Mass Transit III series, and the AR-37 Paragon Light Transport.

Oh, if Chris' name sounds familiar that's because he is the ENnie Award winning cartographer for Numenera.  So make sure you give him some love and pickup some of his maps!

Enough backstory, on to some of our session highlights!

Graverobber

In this one-shot scenario, the Villainous Scum are mercenaries paid for service to the Empire.  A genius Verpine droid engineer named Cyrex has been spotted raiding the shattered Graveyard for artifacts that hidden beneath Alderaan's surface before its destruction.  The Villainous Scum must disable Cyrex's transport, capture the Verpine engineer, and bring her back to a nearby Imperial base.

The Villainous Scum

  • Commander Dragoon, an Honorable Speaker who Hunts with Great Skill, played by +Kailon Rislen.
  • Mist, a Mad Explorer (Stealth) who Moves Like a Cat, played by +Aaron Virag.
  • Seraph, a Doomed Warrior who Sees Beyond, played +David Howard.
  • Rondi, a Cruel Adept who Focuses Mind Over Matter, played +Jeff Scifert.

Adventure Notes

  • We opened the adventure using in media res, with the players VT-49 Decimator Class ship chasing the AR-37 Paragon Light Transport through the Graveyard.  I found the ship-to-ship combat rules featured in the Rebel Galaxy recursion from Worlds Numberless and Strange to be perfect for quick, narrative combat.  I made the party's ship, "The Last Dance", a level 4 vessel with 2 weapon systems, and Cyrex's ship was level 3 with 1 weapon system.
  • Once on board the Paragon Light Transport the player characters faced a particularly nasty troupe of rogue droids, all heavily modified by Cyrex.  It should be no surprise that I decided to reskin two creatures from the Cypher System Rulebook and use them as droids.  The Scrap Drone became the "Scrap Droid", and the Mechanical Soldier served as a wicked Assassin Droid.
  • Cyrex also chose to use the Paragon Light Transport as a weapon against the player characters.  While facing droids, the Villainous Scum had to deal with ejecting escape pods, opening cargo bay doors, and a trapped computer terminal.  For each of these challenges I assigned appropriate difficulty levels and let the players figure out ways to outthink the verpine engineer's plot.
  • At the end of this short adventure the Villainous Scum had Cyrex in their custody.  She came close to spacing at least one of them out of the main cargo bay airlock, but was too late.  The characters realized that the engineer was in possession of knowledge that could be used to gain control all droids on a single planet, a fierce weapon indeed.  Should the adventure have continued beyond this initial session, the Villainous Scum would find out quickly that Cyrex could cause havoc on their own vessel.

Star Tours - Episode I - A Cypher System/Star Wars Campaign

The Force Awakens Everything

Like many of our fellow gamer-friends, our household has yet again become obsessed with Star Wars following this week's release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens for home viewing.  We're back to watching the movies, the animated shows, and the YouTube fan-creations, as well as playing the video games and reading the books.  My son Cooper has been especially struck, as his status as a fan has grown exponentially since discovering Boba Fett at Disney World last October.

Naturally, I've been itching to get back to Star Wars role-playing games, and have been flipping through my old Saga Edition stuff as well as my new Edge of the Empire and Age of Rebellion books.  I wanted to play something, but I also wanted to play something quickly and with the family.  Last time we were in one of these obsessive states I created a system of conversion notes for running Star Wars adventures using the Cypher System Rulebook.

Since my family is already familiar with the Cypher System through our experiences with Numenera and The Strange, it seemed like the perfect way to get everyone to the table quickly.  It would also give me the opportunity to try my Cypher System Star Wars conversion notes for the first time.  While we had planned to play during my Villainous Scum blog series, the Cypher System game ended up getting cancelled due to illness.

These kids are always bringing some kind of disease into our house!

A Star Tours Campaign

If we were going to jump into a Cypher System Star Wars campaign, I wanted to do so with a full family-style campaign.  We've run a lot of one-shots in the last year, but it's been a very long time since we've run a series of adventures for the wife and kids.  Although there were some initial requests for me to run a Star Wars: Rebels adventure, using the characters from the show and the corresponding Disney Infinity 3.0 figures, I declined.  I wanted the kids to come of with some original creations, even if they closely mirrored other characters from the Star Wars universe.

During our vacation to Disney World, during which I spent a lot of time reading through the Star Wars: Edge of the Empire corebook, I got the idea of running a campaign based on the Star Tours: The Adventures Continue attraction at Hollywood Studios.  If you are unfamiliar with what has become my favorite ride at Disney World (as well as Cooper's), you can get an idea of what to expect in this video.

On the Star Tours ride, guests board a Starspeeder 1000 for a sight-seeing tour around the Star Wars universe.  Something goes wrong on each trip, and the scenes are randomized so that you can ride two, three, or ten times in a day and have different experiences.

I thought it would be fun for the player characters in this new campaign to work directly for Star Tours, as souvenir wranglers, vacation planners, and galactic tour guides.  The wife and kiddos were up for the idea, so we got right to character generating.

Our Star Tours Tour Guides

Creating characters to match obvious Star Wars archetypes is very easy with the Cypher System Rulebook.  Just like Numenera and The Strange, each character is built with three parts, forming a core statement:  I am an adjective noun who verbs.

Carrie asked if she could use one of her original character designs (solidly based on Rey) from some Star Wars stories she had written.  She wanted to be a human force user and mechanic with repair skills, who will eventually unlock her powers and become a full Jedi.  Reia is a Mechanical Adept (Tech) who Focuses Mind Over Matter.

Evie (the resident Star Wars: X-Wing expert) is an extreme wookie fanatic.  Note her Chewbacca Build-a-Bear above!  For her character she wanted to combine her love for the miniatures game with her furry fandom.  Her character would be the group's powerful wookie pilot.  Zhoosa is a Strong Explorer who Pilots Starcraft.

Cooper is all about the Fett.  Boba, Jango, he doesn't care.  Back when we were at Disney in October Cooper fell in love with everything Boba Fett, and he insisted on playing a "relative" (perhaps a second unaltered clone?) of the famous bounty hunter.  Coopa Fett is an Impulsive Warrior who Masters Weaponry.

Finally it was up to +Jennifer Walls to come up with her own character type.  Since she's a travel agent in real life, specializing in Disney vacations, she wanted to bring some of her own experiences into her character.  The junk-collecting Squib alien species looks a little like a rabbit, so she could use our new Zootopia Disney Infinity figure for her galactic tour guide.  Galaxie Hopper is a Jovial Speaker who Explores Dark Places.

The Pirates of Prexiar

For our adventure I wanted to reach back into my first experiences with the original Star Wars Role-Playing Game by West End Games.  I purchased the Second Edition: Revised and Expanded book back in 1997, and one of the first adventures I ran was "The Pirates of Prexiar", which is an introductory adventure that can be found on page 174.  The adventure included a daring infiltration, an awesome chase scene, and plenty of moments for the Star Wars themes to envelope players new to the game.

Rather than base the adventure on Prexiar, I thought I'd move it to Endor, since its a world that all three kids know well.  Carrie wanted her character Reia to have been an orphan stranded on Endor, so that could make for some interesting backstory too.

As with almost all of my Cypher System conversions, I did this one on the fly.  Pirate guards?  Level 2 foes.  Vangar the Barabel Pirate Lord is a Level 5 opponent, level 6 against any attempts to dodge his fearsome melee attacks.  We'll get to the spaceship stats next game, as we didn't get that far during this session.

On to the game!

Star Tours - Episode I - The Pirates of Endor

Zhoosa, Reia, Galaxie Hopper, and Coopa Fett were all members of Star Tours' Concession and Souvenir Division on a desperate mission to the Forest Moon of Endor to recover stolen brochures from the dastardly Pirate Lord Vangar.  Star Tours command paid a hefty sum for the printing of those brochures, and believed it was worth risking the lives of four employees to ensure their return.

"Budget cuts," Reia mumbled.

Orbiting the forest moon in the Starlight Espresso, a sleek Starspeeder 1000, the team needed to scan the moon for the secret pirate base.  Fortunately, R2-E0, the team's astromech droid, aided Zhoosa in her scan.  Once the coordinates were locked into the ship's system, the wookie pilot guided the ship into the forests below.

Unfortunately for Zhoosa, there were high winds during the landing, causing the Starlight Espresso to pitch and roll wildly as it descended through the trees.  The ship crashed into a mossy hill and rolled onto its side.

Reia knew that she could repair the Starlight Espresso, and preferred to do so before the team started searching for the secret pirate base.  Climbing outside of the vessel, the mechanic grabbed her tool kit and started mending the starboard stabilizers.  She was almost done when she heard primal screaming from a nearby tree.

Ewoks!

Reia had befriended many ewoks during her time on Endor, but these five seemed especially agitated.  They were each armed with spears and seemed intent on fighting.  Noting the threat, the rest of the crew climbed outside the ship.  Coopa Fett was prepared for a fight, and had his rifle trained on the nearest ewok before Galaxie Hopper stepped forward.  The team's squib tour guide used her Vocal Translator to ensure her words were heard correctly.  Galaxie stated that the Star Tours employees meant the ewoks no harm, and that they were there to deal with the pirates.  The ewoks must not have been fans of Vanger, and they offered their aid.

Nugget, Wugget, Wocket, Pocket, and Socket were now official Star Tours subcontractors!

[GM's Note:  Cooper named three of the ewoks, and Evie two.]

Coopa Fett still wanted to blow something up, so he offered to explore the pirate base on his own.  Engaging his Jet Belt [Wings Cypher], Coopa Fett flew off towards the base.  Careful to stay out of sight, the bounty hunter circled the base several times and got a good look at the layout before returning to the rest of the team.

Once back, Coopa Fett drew a map.

[GM's Note:  I thought it would be entertaining to let Cooper draw pirate base map "as he saw it."  So I let him peak behind the GM screen and look at my map, and he in turn drew his own rendition.  The team then had to make their plans based on Cooper's drawing.  Needless to say, the map wasn't very accurate.]

While Coopa Fett begged to invade the base guns blazing, Galaxie Hopper had a much more measured plan for entrance.  The fast talking squib approached the front of the base and claimed that she was a member of "Gleaming Galaxy Cleaning", ready for her first day on the job.  The dimwitted guards bought into the ruse, and pointed Galaxie towards the cleaning supplies.  Crossing the base, she found that the brochures were still safe in their boxes, just outside of the massive Pirate Corvette.

Using her commlink Galaxie called for the rest of the team to enter the base.

Coopa Fett still had some juice left in his Jet Belt, so he stealthily flew across the base, landing on top of the Pirate Corvette but still out of view.  His blaster rifle was drawn, and Galaxie Hopper had to repeatedly ask the bounty hunter to not shoot anyone.

Reia dug through her backpack and found a Visage Changer mask that could make her look like anyone.  The mechanical adept took on the appearance of a pirate, and bound Zhoosa's hands together.

[Yes, they were going for the classic "Wookie Prisoner" technique.]

Reia talked her way past the pirate guards.  Once inside the base's perimeter, the mechanic and her wookie pilot ran over to stolen brochures.  There was a large speeder near the Pirate Corvette, so Galaxie had the team load up the brochures for a quick getaway.  Zhoosa then powered up the speeder and took off for the base's fence, but crashed into a stack of metal crates along the way making all kinds of noise.

Now alerted to the theft of their rightfully stolen property, the pirates sounded the base's klaxons and prepared for battle.

As Zhoosa sped off, followed by a flying Coopa Fett being ridden by Galaxie Hopper, the entire team thought that they had made it away safely.  Until they reached the Starlight Espresso!

Parked next to the Star Tours vessel was another speeder piloted by Vanger the Barabel Pirate Lord.  Before the team could react, Vanger blew up the Starlight Espresso, and let out a maniacal laugh.  The team was stuck on Endor, and they could hear more pirate speeders in the distance.

Did R2-E0 survive?

What about the ewoks?

How would the Star Tours employees escape Endor?

... to be continued in Episode II...

Parting Shots

This definitely felt like Star Wars!

I have a second Star Wars Cypher System game scheduled this weekend with "grown ups", so I may save some of my thoughts until then, but I definitely got all of the "feels" during this session.  The encounters were quick and exciting, and over-the-top when necessary.  Since the team were supposed to be "good guys", they relied on their Cyphers over their weapons to think their way out of direct confrontation.  I expect this to change during the next session, as Cooper seems hellbent on blowing something up!

Fingers crossed for another great session tomorrow night, and a successful follow up to our family campaign next week.

Now I'm off to prepare for some Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures Game action!

Metal Myk Meets the CypherCaster

I went and wrote something...

... yeah, yeah, I write things all the time, but usually its more of a "blog'ish" nature.  But this time I've gone all professional!

Last year I came up with a list of "life goals" that I'd like to achieve at some point.  Call it a bucket list, or a pre-midlife crisis, your call.  One of these goals was to write and publish a role-playing game adventure somewhere, either on my own or in a publication somewhere.

Looks like I get to scratch that off my list!

Some of you may remember that I posted an adventure outline called Metal Myk's Mercs back in January.  I called it an "outline" because it wasn't a fully fleshed out adventure.  Actually, I didn't think it was possible for me to write something that someone else could run in one of their games.  Most of the time, when I write an adventure it's just a simple outline that I follow, and I literally fill in all of the white space around the printed page with notes that I think up on the fly.  But a few folks out there, notably the incredibly persuasive +David Wilson Brown, pushed me towards the idea of taking one of those outlines and turning it into something more.

When the CypherCast Network was on the hunt for content in March's CypherCaster issue, I knew that I had to finally step up to the plate!

So I tethered myself to my iMac for an entire afternoon, and started adding content to Metal Myk.  Since the adventure was initially inspired by a Channing Tatum sketch on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, everyone in my house took turns yelling "boo yaaaaaaah" at me while I wrote.

To help stir the creative juices, I had access to an incredible map by +Miska Fredman that got tossed into the adventure!

(PS:  If you don't know Miska, go check out his Patreon page RIGHT NOW and get on board!  He also provided the map for my Gods of the Fall Actual Play!)

By the end of the day the adventure was completed, and Metal Myk's Mercs was much more than an outline... it was four-thousand words of Instant Adventure Formatted craziness.

I'm so proud that Metal Myk found his home in the CypherCaster Magazine, but don't worry... there's more than just one of my adventures in this month's incredible issue...

CypherCaster Magazine, Issue #5

There's a heck of a lot of epic Cypher-swag in this month's CypherCaster Magazine!

  • A MCG Product Preview
  • An interview with +Bruce R Cordell+Shanna Germain, and +Dennis Detwiller about the Worlds of the Cypher System.
  • A comprehensive list of 3rd party content

DCCRPG World Tour 2016 - Well of Souls with the Norwin Game Knights

A judge enjoying little nacho cups courtesy of Game Knight Jeremy

Ever since the summer I've been running monthly Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG events with the Norwin Game Knights.  While we've had a few "grown ups" at the tables, most of my events have been for the 12 and under crowd.  My daughter Carrie has been recruiting some of her friends from school to start showing up, and we even pulled off a short Crawling Under a Broken Moon campaign.  But running games for packs of wild tweens can get a bit rough!

So for this month's event I declared that I would be judging for the thirteen and up crowd, and that someone else could take on the tween'sponsibility.  Lucky for me that last night I was able to outsource some of the Judging responsibilities... to the next generation of gamers!

Two of my players from previous games, Evan and Matthew, came prepared to run their own events.  This was a special moment for our club, as it was Matthew's first time running an RPG in public, and Evan's first time running an RPG ever!

Even though they technically ran adventures from two separate OSR systems, the similarity of DCCRPG to BFRPG allowed both game masters to use pre-gen 0-level characters from the Purple Sorcerer website.

Evan's purchased his DCC rule book on DriveThruRPG and had it printed

This arrangement worked out wonderfully!  There were eleven players looking for games, and between the three of us we were able to keep the table sizes manageable.  Evan and Matthew each had three players, and I had five.

Father and daughter game mastering!

Even my daughter Evie had four players at her No Thank You, Evil RPG session!  All in all, counting judges and game masters, there were nineteen RPG'ers playing with the Norwin Game Knights.  We've come a long way!

That dang puzzle!

Well of Souls

For my part of the evening I ran Well of Souls by +Carl Bussler as part of the DCCRPG World Tour 2016.  While not the most deadly DCC adventure (only four of sixteen character perished), its certainly one of the most challenging... mostly due to that infernal puzzle in the second chamber (NO SPOILERS!)  Actually, the group had a hard time just climbing down the well to begin with... here are some highlights:

  • +andrew lyon won "best character names" with Billion, Tedford, and Rufus.  Sadly Rufus was killed.
  • After most of the party had climbed down the well, led there by Farid the guide, Rambo and Annie (both played by Ryan), declined to climb down.  Since she had one of the Tablets of Fate, Annie the Orphan climbed down eventually.
  • While everyone other than Rambo were exploring the area just beneath the well, Rambo decided that Farid had to climb down to be "bait" for some of the cave lurkers. But instead of letting him climb down, Rambo pushed Farid over the edge of the well, hoping that the guide would survive the sixty-foot fall.  He didn't.
  • The very next chamber of the room, the "big puzzle" room, shut down the entire quest.  Over an hour was spent in this room, as the party battled wave after wave of skeletons after failing each attempt to solve the puzzle.  The party did discover that oars (treated as 1d6 damage causing weapons) were the most effective battle-gear to be wielded in combat.
  • We ran out of time just after the group figured out the solution to this adventure.  Thank you Michael for finally solving the puzzle!
Here are a few of the more interesting Quotes:

  • "I wanna be something more than this!" - I asked Michael to have his character (Lennie the Barber) make some kind of epic declaration before leading the party to glory.  This is what he came up with.
  • "We're going into the dungeon but we're not taking Rambo with us?" - Craig asked, completely bewildered.
  • "He's rolling '6d10', there's NO WAY there can be a pattern!" - Andy stated to Jeremy, who kept looking for a pattern between the numbers generated by the spinning wheel.

While an enjoyable evening, I don't think we had the "A-Team" for complex puzzle solving.  Next month I'll make sure to bring an adventure more focused on slaughter, destruction, and war!

See you all at our next event on Friday, April 22nd!

Cypher System Fantasy - Welcome to The Strange

At Last

Tuesday's game was ten sessions in the making.  Way back in July, when I first started planning for this campaign, I knew that I wanted to run an Ardeyn native game of The Strange.  But I was also very excited for my new Cypher System Rulebook's immanent arrival.  Our Tuesday night crew had wrapped up a year long Numenera campaign, and I needed to cook up something big and spectacular.

All of my players are veterans of The Strange, and several were part of the playtest with me before the game's release.  If we were to start a campaign on the Ardeyn recursion of The Strange, with characters native to the fantasy realm, the big reveal of other worlds' existence would be muted.  I wanted a big surprise twist, but since The Strange is essentially designed for those kinds of mash-ups, it was always going to be a challenge...

... but what if we didn't start with The Strange?

Using the Cypher System Rulebook, I came up with the idea of running an all Ardeyn fantasy campaign outside of The Strange.  Perhaps the players would suspect something at some point, but I didn't want to give any significant indications that we would ever travel to Earth or another recursion.  There would be no mention of Spinners or Vectors, Translation or Inapposite Gates.  All would be revealed at some point, when I'd find a way to get the fantasy characters over to Earth without translating.

Just like Beastmaster 2: Through the Portal of Time.

But I wanted one more hook, some kind of connection between the two worlds.  Frank wasn't sure of what character to create, so we got together and thought up the idea of Gabriella Winter: a college-aged hacker working for The Estate, posing as Sister Sariety on Ardeyn.  "Gabbie" was a character Frank returned to from time to time, always in a different campaign setting.  Gabriella existed in our Eberron campaign, our Dark Sun 4e campaign, and as "Gabriella the Teenage Lich" in Necessary Evil.

Come to think of it, perhaps this has always been the same Gabriella... just traveling recursion to recursion as someone else.  That's the magic of The Strange as a campaign setting... anything is possible!

So there you have it, faithful readers!  If you've been with us all these months, interested in a Cypher System Fantasy campaign, you've actually been reading about The Strange all along...

Mwa, ha ha ha ha!

Episode 11: Welcome to The Strange

[Note:  Nearly all of this dialogue was exclaimed by my players Tuesday evening during this amazing game.  I've done my best to capture all of it and put it right into the recap.]

"Gabriella!" Agent Calders screamed out just before taking another bullet.  "You're too late!  Run!"  Bullets few across the room, as the party emerged from a massive circular gate-like structure.  The entire wall and window assembly in front of everyone was completely torn asunder, with visible claw marks covering the floor and walls.

The Focused Inapposite Transfer Device must have worked, Gabriella thought.  The Hofmann Institute device was designed to force entities traveling from Ardeyn via Inapposite Gate, to come through this transfer gate.

Having just traveled from the fantasy realm of Ardeyn to the Hoffman Institute office in Alexandria, Virginia, everyone in the adventuring party was in a state of shock.  With her own Baezedaar Bracer destroyed, Gabriella translated back into her proper form.  But Charming Spinner's companions still carried with them their original, Ardeyn aspects.  Zamani was still an Ugallu, Verrenn undead, Shenuesh a lycanthrope, and Yaren an armor-clad knight.  As gunfire from four armor-clad mercenaries raked the party of adventurers again, their shock melted away and everyone sprang into action...

... everyone except Shenuesh, who was still enslaved by Gabriella's cypher.

Wanting to dish out a little pain of their own, Verrenn and Zamani started lashing out with their own powers.  The Adept blasted the mercenaries with Arcane Fire while Zamani summoned wind and lightning energy into fearsome bolts.  Gabriella called out to the group to follow her, as she retreated back to a nearby elevator door.  The entire team followed, with Yaren, shield raised, placing himself between the mercenaries and his fellow adventurers.

Once everyone was in the elevator Verrenn looked around.

"Why have you brought us nto this small box room!" the Spectral Adept exclaimed.

Gabriella Winter had a lot of explaining to do.

When the elevator reached the first floor the Charming Spinner guided the team towards an emergency exit.  Once outside, the party noticed that several unmarked cars were parked just outside of the office building, but a sizable park awaited just across some train tracks to the north.

Careful to be quiet, the fantasy adventurers followed Gabriella into the park, where they almost gave themselves away after bumping into a pair of homeless people.

"Oh my God," one of the homeless screamed out.  "There's a werewolf, a ghost, and a giant walking cat coming after me!"

Fortunately, Verrenn put an end to the woman's yelling with a simple Stasis spell, while Shenuesh knocked the other man out cold.

Once at the park, Gabriella tried to calm down the very angry adventurers.  She explained that the world they all came from was actually a fantasy world, another land that was very different from Earth.

"Which of the moons are we on?" Verrenn asked.

Looking up, Gabriella pointed to the Earth's one moon.  "We're not on a moon, we're on Earth.  That's our moon."

Zamani was horrified.  "There's only one of them?  How can you live like this?"

Gabriella asked again that everyone just trust her, and that she would find a way to get them home, but first they had to get to somewhere safe.  Crossing the street into a nearby shopping plaza, the Charming Spinner hailed a taxi and convinced the driver that they were a troupe of actors just leaving a play.

"Yeah, that's fine.  I've seen weirder here in DC," the taxi driver stated matter-of-factly.

Once in the taxi, Gabriella asked to be taken to her hotel, the Hampton Inn just south of Old Town.

Along the way to the hotel, Verrenn decided to call out everything he saw outside the windows, as he was completely amazed by this futuristic evening.

After seeing a Target:  "That seems to be an extremely large place to buy bows and arrows."

After seeing a Dicks:  "No."

After seeing a Burger King:  "Who is this King of Burger?"

After seeing some cars on the Beltway:  "How could we all be moving this fast without horses!"

After seeing the Washington Monument in the distance:  "Surely that must be part of a Qephilim ruin!"

"You're probably right," quipped Gabriella.

Eventually the taxi pulled up to the Hampton Inn and Gabriella led everyone into the back entrance, using her keycard to open the exterior door, and then the door to her hotel room on the second floor.

What played out next was absolute madness!

"What is this black frame?  Do you worship darkness?" Zamani asked, poking and proding at the television.  Once the TV was on, Gabriella turned on Sponge Bob Square Pants for her teammates.  Shenuesh, still enslaved, watched calmly while Zamani kept clicking the channels, battling Verrenn for the remote.

"This is a magnificent scrying item!" Verrenn kept shouting at the TV.  The Spectral Adept eventually got ahold of the remote.  "A Magic Wand!"

"Dibs!"  Zamani yelled at Verrenn, grabbing the remote and accidentally turning on a rather interestinig Pay-Per-View movie.  Everyone in the room started staring at the screen when the phone rang.

"Hello?" Gabriella asked, picking up the phone.  It was the front desk, and they were concerned at the Pay-Per-View usage, as it wasn't approved by Gabriella's employer.  The Spinner agreed to go downstairs and handle the problem in person.

As Gabriella left the room, she could hear Verrenn yell at Zamani.  "Bring back the amusing sponge-form creature," the undead wizard demanded.

Once downstairs, Gabriella groaned.  Nick, the night auditor at the Hampton Inn, was an absolute jerk, and he was always trying to cozy up to the Spinner.  This time, he tried using her apparent questionable Pay-Per-Viewing to his advantage, insinuating that he'd let Gabriella's superiors at The Estate know about her usage.  Gabbie wasn't putting up with that crap, though.  She talked her way past Nick's antics, and went back upstairs...

... walking in to her room just in time to see Shenuesh (now un-enslaved) trying trying smash her laptop.

"Stop!  We need that!" Gabriella screamed.

Figuring that this was the right time to let everyone in on the big secret, Gabriella had all o the adventurers sit down around her computer screen.  The Spinner carefully explained that Ardeyn was another world, much like Earth, but that it existed first as a "computer game."  Gabriella was a hacker of some renown, and had managed to acquire one of the few copies of "Ardeyn: Land of the Curse", the same game that Carter Strange used to upload into the Dark Energy Network (a.k.a. "The Strange") just a few years earlier.  In her time spent with the alpha version of the MMO, Gabriella learned all about the people and places of Ardeyn.

The Estate needed to send an expert to Ardeyn to locate the whereabouts of a potential threat to Earth, a dormant dragon named Rhilan and a set of bracers that could allow creatures to maintain their powers on other recursions.  The Hoffman Institute, an allied agency with the Estate, believed that a very rich and politically connected organization on Earth known as the Bradley Cooperative wanted to bring Rhilan to Earth with one of the Baezedaar Bracers.  Since the bracers most likely worked like constant inapposite gates, always "on" and always "pinging" potential planetovores in the Strange itself, the threat had to be dealt with.  Unfortunately, political pressure from two politicians in Washington shut down the Estate's operation.

Something more covert would be needed.

In exchange for removing her extensive criminal record, Gabriella Winter would make several trips to Ardeyn via translation and become "Sister Sariety."  Once on Ardeyn, she would find native adventurers to go on a quest to destroy Rhilan and his following.  Should Rhilan's followers give him a Baezedaar Bracer, and send him back to Earth or any other recursion with all of the powers of Magic, Sister Sariety/Gabriella was to follow, along with her team of magic wielding adventurers.

Gabriella showed the travelers from Ardeyn several scenes from their homeland on her computer as she spoke, trying to prove the truth.

"My world is probably a video game to someone else, somewhere," Gabriella stated as she tried to offer some empathy.  She showed the Citadel Hazurrium, the dungeons below the Queensland, and even gave Zamani proof of the Shadow Realm that the monk had been seeking for so long.

Once everyone agreed to to hear more from Gabbie's superiors, the Spinner turned on the news and saw that there were several dragon sightings over Washington DC.  She texted Assistant Director Conrad Merrick of the Estate, and agreed to meet up the following morning.  It was going to be a long week.

The next day, after a long shower, Gabriella went downstairs and retrieved food from the continental buffet for all of her fellow party members.  For most of them, this was their first taste of Earth food, including the hot beverage that Gabbie kept referring to as "coffee."

"Why does this smell so good, and yet tastes so bad?" Zamani wondered out loud.

A little past nine o'clock Director Merrick called Gabbie and stated that a car would be there soon to pick everyone up.  They were to meet in Fairfax, Virginia, just west of downtown Washington DC.  As the party packed up their gear, Zamani noticed something strange about the device known as a "remote control."

The simple piece of Earth technology had changed into an cypher that could bestow arcane armor.  Strange.

After an hour long drive through weekend traffic, the party arrived at a shopping complex in Fairfax.  The Estate office here was an abandoned space located above a Jersey Mike's sandwich store.  It was here that they met Conrad Merrick.

Conrad elaborated on some of the news that Gabriella had shared.  The Bradley Cooperative's well funded plan to bring Rhilan to Earth put everyone at risk, both those of this world, and those on Ardeyn.  Should any of the Baezedaar Bracers remain on Earth, a planetovore would surely arrive.  Conrad feared that it could already be too late, as agents operating in the Strange itself believed "something" was currently en route to Earth, and could be as few as six or seven days from making contact.

Conrad's tone was brisk, and his phrases laden with cursing.  "You speak a great deal of excrement," Verrenn remarked to the man.

The party seemed mostly against the idea of helping the Estate, as they all (with the exception of Gabriella) believed that they were putting far more into the deal than they would receive.  But with Conrad's insistance that Earth's destruction would lead to Ardeyn's, the adventurers reluctantly agreed to continue following Gabriella, so long as they could be returned home.

Conrad believed that if the party could destroy Rhilan's Baezedaar Bracer, it would greatly reduce the dragon's power, turning him into something that could exist within the standard physics of Earth.  That said, he cautioned the party on removing their own bracers, as they could lose the assets that would help them track down and defeat Rhilan.  Once the dragon's bracer was destroyed or captured, they could return to the Estate, and travel back to Ardeyn...

... probably.  Conrad wasn't one-hundred percent sure how yet, but he was working on the problem.

Reviewing their leads, the party decided that they had three possible options to start their investigation:
  • They could track Rhilan's path over Washington DC, and see if they could hunt the dragon the old fashioned way.
  • They could visit the politicians working with the Bradley Cooperative, and try to get information through intimidation or more.
  • They could go directly to Deep Creek, Maryland, where the Bradley Cooperative was located.
Choosing the third option, the party left Conrad and went with their driver to the van.  It was time to visit western Maryland.
